You could take the optimistic view that a mitt full of door dings would actually improve the appearance of a POS like the Aztek/Yaris/etc .... and look forward to the end of each day to see what 'scum sculpture' has appeared on the vehicle .... no more dread ...

 

From experience and ownership - I currently own a 00 Nissan Altima GXE w/175K miles. (Bought NEW) Dents/Dings/F-Up Paint - you name it. Interior in Great shape - If something happens to it while parked Oh- well - KBB on it is less than 3.5k - But it's been a DAMN good car.

Still , since I bought my S4 - I have been able to keep the mileage down on the S4 to 12K a year. (2k of that was driving her home for OK) Phoenix is definitely a CAR Town.

 

I live out nowhere. The town has 450 people in it and everyone knows everyone. Wide open roads with no traffic. thus no shopping malls, fast food places, strip malls, large parking areas. when I drive the P car to the nearest Wal-Mart (42 miles away in a town with 5000 people) I park way out in the parking lot and no one even comes close to parking next to me..

The only thing I worry about are in town dips and wildlfie.... oh - and the cops...

Harvey, look at where you live. Come on!! That is the 4X4 capitol of the world. You have to have at least a 3" lift kit on a chubby or fard 4X4 truck with full set of KC lights facing both front and rear, buckshot mudders, and a rifle rack in the window, along with the Pissin' Boy doing the deed on your rival truck makers emblem. Do that and your daily driver will get all the respect you could want.

Around here you have to have Flowmasters and number 3 on your truck. The city must send them out in the mail to new residents. I'm waiting for them to kick me out for the simple fact that I drive a Ford.

 

My 'chebby 1978 4WD w/new engine and drivetrain, etc. will kick your new truck's butt in the dirt! The insurance totaled it when I got T-boned 3 months after I had the mechanical rebuild ($12K) but I bought it back and did a redneck job of jerry-rigging some body work with come-alongs, creative sledge hammer work, and spray cans of almost matching paint so I'm READY for the parking lot wars....as soon as I get a new hook on my tow chain and a bank loan for the gas. Takes 40 gallons to fill it.

BTW, real men drive trucks with mufflers? Innovative concept but it won't fly in NORTH Idaho.

I live a few blocks from Detroit city, have driven my 928 as a daily driver for 6 years or so, parked everywhere from downtown to the suburbs and haven't had any dings.
Hmmm,,,do you suppose the Chevy bowtie on the side fender has anything to do with it?

The only mishap was from a fellow Porsche owner's 2 year old in my own driveway. He circled the whole car while dragging a stick against the paint while tapping it here and there. If there ever was grounds for murder,,,,,,

 

This big monster is already considered a dimpled, dinge and scratched classic American pick-up truck. It is my hauling **** truck and where ever I drive it, there seems to be no problems.

I have a two year old Dodge Neon (black of course) that is my daily driver, even this car can not escape the inconsiderate a-holes and pieces of human garbage. These are the people that should INVOLUNTARILY donate their organs, eyes and skin to the more considerate of the human species. The way I figure it, not only are they hording valuable organs and useful body parts, they are also taking up space and are causing me no end of worry and dispair over the crap they do to my cars. Simply because they don't give a crap how they open their car door, push their grocery buggy or let their kids run free to cause misery.

I was at a local food joint that we eat a lot. It was the second day of my 928S4 ownership and I parked to take two spots and angled the car. Because these people at this place just slam open their doors. The owner hollered at me and demanded for me not to take two parking spaces. I looked at my wife, told her to get in, and hollered at the owner, no problem and left, NEVER TO BE BACK I MIGHT ADD. This owner does not mind all the other patrons letting their kids run wild, spill drinks and disrupt my quiet time with my family. So as my Grand-Daddy would have said "P!$$ on them and their silly resturant"

I am just so tired of people in general. Perhaps because I deal with the scum of the Earth day in and day out. In fact, I go to deal with one today. I defend these creatures.... don't ask.... somehow fell into criminal defense. But Christ I am good at it.... go figure. I reckon I don't have to like them to defend them. My mother says I am one sick individual.....

There's no rhyme or reason to the behavior, although in my opinion, part of the problem is the moth-to-the-flame effect. Most people seem to be automatically drawn to unique (and/or shiny ) vehicles, so once they get spotted in a parking lot, the eye contact can't be broken until the offender is parked right next door. Parking out in the open only seems to make a nice car stand out even more.

I'll still usually park at the far end of the lot in an end space though. It leaves only one side vulnerable, and most often weeds out at least the lazier scofflaws.

 

You're all right, there's no reason why anyone should go out of their way to damage anyone else's property and it's beyond me to understand the mentality behind it.

I don't know about the whole 'park it in two spots thing' though. To me, that's just askin' for a keying or for someone to snuggle their car up there and dare you to get into yours without damage. But then again, I'm the kind of guy that gets loud when people cut in line at the amusement park . Call it an overactive 'fairness' gland.


One of the first things I taught my kids to do when they were old enough to open car doors was to hold on to it and make sure the wind doesn't grab it and so it doesn't hit any other cars.

My car is a DD and hasn't been the victim of any of this yet, and hopefully my luck will hold out (knocking on wood).

 

It isn't only the cars parked adjacent to my car; it is also those parked in front and to the rear when its parallel parked. I come out all the time to find another scratch in my front or rear bumper. No way can anyone do that to my Rabbit, but they seem to love to do it to the 928. **** on 'em.
