Angry You can't "win" with a Nice Sports Car (dings n' dents)

I'm finding that it's not possible (where I live anyway) to drive a nice car to work and not get door dings, have people spit on car, throw cig butts on it, etc. A few might legitimately blame my personality, but most of these are college kids and don't know me from Adam's housecat. I'm guessing it's some kind of envy. When they're my age, they'll be in the same position so I guess it'll all even out eventually.

In the past two months, on my Audi TT, I've had a hit and run rear-ender while in the parking lot, a door ding and (after I found what I thought was a safe parking spot) four heavy "racing" frisbee hits...two leaving significant dents in the aluminum hood and door. Luckily, I caught the last frisbee kid and quotes for the hood repair are $465 and $500. Paintless dent removal not possible give severity of dent. Cops just said, "Work it out. Your car was in a private parking lot." On most cars, I'd have just shrugged the dent off.

There's no way I'd drive the Porsches to work. So I'm thinking of getting the ugliest POS car possible for the daily driver. Any tips on buying an economical POS in these expensive gasoline times? My pickup hogs the gas or I'd drive it. People are afraid to park near it for fear of catching something. I never thought I'd ever be looking forward to buying a POS car.

Couldn't agree more. Yesterday I pulled into a lot and parked across from a younger woman that was unloading stuff from a cart into her car. There were no other carts around so I felt i was safe from any rolling carts. I came out of the store and her cart is resting against the fender of my car! I was so pissed because she had to place it there for it to be there the way we were parked. Why are people so inconsiderate? She wasn't driving a POS so I felt I was safe.

A Toyota Yaris is what your looking for, one of the ugliest vehicles ever! Right on par with the Aztec, plus it gets better mileage than the Aztec, and it has like 147 or so compartments for storage.

You could just get a pair of leather gloves and a driving cap and take her out on Sundays, and people can point at the old fogey in the Porsh.

I here you about the spitting.
For some reason though, I have not one door ding. - I love Aluminum .......and I realize I must walk a fair distance to keep the body that way when the vehicle is parked when going out.

For a daily driver - I used to drive a 1979 GMC Jimmy painted spray can black with no trim and rust in about every place you can see. The interior was ripped out and it had no passenger seat. No one liked it - in fact just about every week someone would make a comment about upgrading my "ride." About a year ago I got the 928 and immediately started getting smiles and waves and everyone leaves it along because they know I'll start driving the Jimmy again if anyone does anything to my car!!

Well there is no possible way for us to leave our sharks anywhere without wondering if someone will ding, dent, key or outright do wwrong to our prides and joy. There is no moral to this and I've given up on human nature and good will unless a POS owner.
I used to drive to a shopping mall and park mine dowwnright in the most remote place I could find, on a diagonal using 2 spaces and making sure there wasent another car even near it.... lo and behold on my way out - not less than 15 minutes later of course for fear of theft, the worst looking Hyundai Pony or Accent, banged and rusted would be parked right up near it....
Must be a thing about making their cars look better... seriously any car looks better when snuggled up against a POS....
Well my 2 experiences at the mall resolved my doubts and I came to a solid cconclusion.... People dont care, arent careful and dont respect. Since, my love stays at home safe and secure wwhile I let the Honda take the runt of the damage ffor people's unfortunate demise.

My wife's 94 Subaru Legacy 2wd Wagon is, IMHO, one of the best utilitarian car's ever... without being too nice. It's currently got 180,000 miles, purrs right along, gets 31 mpg hauling two big dogs, kids, us and luggage all over the place.

She's got her sights on something new, and with the new job and almost doubled pay, I have a hard time denying that. Probably gonna get her a Fit or a Yaris... then, I'm gonna think seriously about getting rid of my gas hog '98 Dodge Ram and driving that Subaru for another 100,000 miles. I know motorcycle guys that tow flat trailers with two bikes with these cars all over the country and wouldn't trade them for anything.

I see those Subies on Ebay for a grand or just over nowadays.... oh, it's a non-interference 2.2 flat four... you can change the timing belt in about 2 hours. Call it a watercooled 914 engine with better timing and fuel control...
