Default Battery Cable routing question

Some of you miight remember, I am in the process of replacing my old battery cable with a larger diameter one on my '83 Euro 5sp.

I have managed to get all those plastic clamps off. The ones that hold the battery cable against the bottom of the car. Next question.... I can see the battery cable now goes inside some sort of protective covering and up around the back of the engine somewhere. The next time I find it, its in a red colored harness with some other wires coming out in the area of the alternator.

So what is the best way to remove the old cable? Is there a way to get it out of that harness? Should I just cut open the parts of the harness I can see, cut the end of the cable where it starts up the back of the engine and pull it out the front? How do I go about routing the new cable?
I hope these aren't REALLY dumb questions, but I seem to be at a loss at this point as to how to move this project forward. I cannot find anything helpful in either search or in the manuals. Any suggestions?

Thanks

The big wire goes to the starter - then a seperate smaller cable goes on to the alternator and up to the jump post in the engine bay... You should be able to fish to the starter - with the engine lower shield/tray off.
