CIS: Good Cold/Hot starts, bad warm starts
#16
Leakdown only affects the hot and warm starting due to the extra fuel being supplied when the cold start valve is activated. Leakdown can be caused by a leaking injector(s), bad accumulator or a bad check valve. If the engine doesn't miss when first cold started, it probably isn't the injectors leaking. If your accumulator is equipped with backside return line, you can remove it and check for the presence of fuel which will indicate a leaking diapram. If no return line, open the plug or screw on the backside of the accumulator to check for leaking fuel. If those are OK, the problem is probably the check valve. On pumps with external check valves replacement is straight forward. If yor pump has an internal check valve an add on valve is available but may require a little searching. IIRC the 6.5 bar Pierberg pump is supplied with the external check valve and an adapter cap for the internal valve fuel line set ups.

That's OK, my car doesn't have an accumulator, and only has one fuel pump external in the rear (doesn't have one in-tank or in the rear wheel well). Pump is new with an internal check valve. I may still have the fitting and etc for the external valve somewhere...But the pump configuration is correct per Tech Spec Book. ITs been fun-- and frustrating-- chasing down some of the anomolies along the way...
Dennis- thanks for more great input on getting to a diagnosis. I'll check on the above and sort through the checks you mentioned. I'm getting close to very very good running with this car...its been a long road with MUCH help from many folks, including yourself. Maybe a leak down test is next.

I just picked up a set of guages recently, havent tried them out yet. Run all those tests soon. I only have one pump too. I'm pretty sure my pump has an internal check valve too as I dont remember seeing one last time I was under there...
