Default Sqeeky/schreeching brakes

Just fitted new Mintex pads to the front brakes...............great at bringing the car down from high speed but man are they very noisy at slow speed.

What is the latest cure for this annoying irritation?

TIA

Grinding a 45 degree bevel on the leading edge of the pads usually eliminates the phonograph needle/chalk on the blackboard vibration from the sharp 90 degree edge of the pad.

isn't the leading edge of the pad where most breaking/heat build up occurs and grinding it will lower the performance of the pad?

Malcolm,
I had installed Mintex 'red box' pads on all corners of the S4 .... and now on the 5-sp with nary a wimper ( from the car): #1 trick is as Jim says - take a file and 2-3 strokes to chamfer each leading and trailing edge 1-2mm. I also put a small smear of anti-seize on the piston/pad contact area.

The next trick is to take the time to properly bed in the pads - should be quiet then!

I'm using Mintes street pads (ROG100 uses the same BTW). They are installed without silencers or rubber backing. Only with a little caliper grease and they are very quiet never heard a single squeal.

Thanks for the responses.............I have a new set a dampers somewhere from my one and only transaction w/our friends at Devek but thats another thread.

I'll try the champer and anti-sieze as well as fitting the dampers and let you know the results.

cheers all.

Along with the anti-squeal measures, Garth posted a nice reference about breaking in brake pads:

The results are full stopping power with zero, absolutely no noise (screeching etc.).

I champered all four pads (as per the advise above) and installed new dampers; perfect results.

Thanks again to all.

Easiest solution that I've done and this is even without using the dampers, is put enough coats of the red disk brake anti-squeal spray (I forget the brand, but every auto parts store carries it)so that the backs of the pads are smooth. Let each coat get tacky before the next, then install. I spray the coats while I'm taking off the next wheel, altogether maybe 4-6 coats and all of 10-15 min.

That's it, and utter silence.
