grinding noice from the rear brakes
since i got my 1983 i keep hearing some grinding noice coming from the rear brakes. i took the wheel off and the pads seem alright. all i noticed was a wire dangling down. i think it's the wear sensor. but i don't know where it would attach.

Can you narrow it down to left or right? Does the sound change when you lift the car turn the wheel, and have a helper apply brake or e-brake?

BTW if I remember correctly the brake pad sensor is a loop of wire imbedded in a plastic tab. This tab fits in a notch on the face of one brake pad. When the pad wears down enough, the tab begins to wear until the wire loop gets worn down enough to break continuity. That should signal your central warning system and light a warning light on your dash. The dangling wire means the sensor tab probably was not installed properly in the pad. With no sensor your pad may be worn down a little too far and may be causing the sound. You may have pull the pads to check. Just an idea.

Hi if you have a grinding noise in the rear then you inspect the pads for the rotor, if they look good and there is not a stone or other thing between the rotor and backing plate then you should remove the calipers and then the rotors and inspect the E brake as there are small springs that hold the brake shoes to the backing plate and every once in a while they will fall out and make the noise as you describe and also there is a chance that the E brake shoes may have gotten worn out and are stuck grinding on the inner part of the rotor from a sticky or mis adjusted E brake cable or a frozen E brake shoe adjuster
