Default 928 Has Two Major Flaws!

First flaw:

Something along the lines of what Sammy Hagar complained about! I can't find a place to let the car stretch it's legs. Just as I feel like the car is settling down at speed I realize I'm going way too fast and I need to reign her in. It is very frustrating driving this car! Seriously, the cars limits are so high I morally am not comfortable even approaching them. What makes it worse is that the car beckons you to put your foot down. On and off ramps can easily be taken at double to triple posted speeds without even trying. I need to get this shark to the track soon!

Second Flaw:

Every Tom, Dick and Harry teenager (and some adults) want to race. I finally for the first time today had an opportunity to take my son and wife out in the car and enjoy the beautiful weather. My son was all smiles and my wife was complaining of whip lash everytime I accelerated . Anyways we're on a two lane road and some guy and his buddy are in a sedan and they slow down to 45 in a 55. So I say Ok I'm passing. Sure enough just as I pull out I see a big puff of smoke from his exhaust as he attempts to race me. Obviously no match and I pass like he's standing still but what the hell!!! The guy starts tailgaiting me and my wife is getting frustrated now. So I slow it up and let the guy pass. I eventually turned off as I didn't want to deal with this idiot. Again very frustrating. Oh and this isn't the first time this has happened. As we head home my wife says....geez everyone stares at this car. I'm hoping when the car is in MA I won't experience the drag racing at least.

Here's a shot while out and about today:

Yep, especailly Mustang owners. Here in Socal I get attention but not a lot. Too many really high end cars running around. Only those in the know pay attention.

I take the car on many long roadtrips and with a radar detector and eagly eye vision you really can run somehwere between 80-100mph across most of the country without too much trouble.

I too seem to get all the wanna race knuckleheads but it seems to me the high powered SUV/pick up crowds are the worse. Just last night on the 110 south to San Pedro I found myself passing a large Nissan Titan with balloon tires that suddenly didn't quite drop back. It was 2:30am, I'd been running a very steady 95mph and was set to go by at a good clip but nooooooo, next thing I know his headlights are blinding me so I put the hammer down and left it all behind.

I had the privilage of living with a Ferrari 360 Spyder for about 2 weeks. You think you're getting raced in the 928? Fugettabout it. In the 360 it was as if I was a pace car for every fool on the road and Porsche Boxster owners seem to be the worst culprit. I would take my Audi S4 down to Huntington Beach to pick up the 360 and with passenger in the car I said, "pay attention. I'm going to run as close to 90-100mph as I can all the way down to HB. You'll notice I pass almost everyone at a good clip never to see them again." "When we come back in the 360, I will run at 100mph and you'll see the same group of cars trying to hang as long as they can." So sure enough, female passenger takes note on the way down. I pass just about everyone unnoticed. Northbound in the 360, I had even minivans trying to keep pace at 100mph and the kicker? Most peope try to NOT LOOK AT ME. On a clear stretch I would just turn my head and stare and the fools in the next car over would stare straight ahead. Trying to look as casual and nonchalant as possible. It was hilarious. Also didn't help this car had a stage 3 Capristo exhaust. It basically screamed so any move I made was telegraphed by sound ten fold.

When I'm in the 928 and something hot and fast runs up on me even at not so great a passing differential I am so careful to not do anything. I just let the car go. I don't want to be that guy!

Yup the first week or two of ownership – I must have been “challenged” more times I can ever remember in any other vehicle I’ve owned. Oh I’ve owned faster and more agile cars but never in this combination of white knuckle speed & nimbleness.

But back to the subject – while I enjoy the attention from folks who rave over it and really want to know more about it, this car does seem to draw every moron suffering from pecker shrinkage. I get especially annoyed by those little ricers with the huge fart can hanging out the back end trying to prove something. I always got a lot of attention & thumbs up in my MG but it’s totally different with the Shark.

That said while I don’t normally give in the impromptu challenges - I do have to admit it is kind of funny to watch their jaw drop as the Shark effortlessly blew by them or left them still sitting there at a stoplight looking silly.

360 no doubt would attract more attention. I do have to say that I am guilty of following a Ferrari or two, mostly to listen to the beautiful melodies they create.

Kaz,
I used to live in SoCal a couple of years ago and I agree it really is a bit easier to find a place to open up the car. The problem with the East Coast is the cops are a bit more agressive, they have more time on their hands and they have many more places to hide. In SoCal I always watched the on ramps as that is where they always loved to wait. Miss driving there.

Chazz,
LOL, that's an old factory of some sort. Typical Maine scenery. I was going to head out to the lake to take some pics but I ran out of time and decided to stop when I had a chance. Maybe next weekend I'll get some decent scenery and post a few more shots.

Answer to Problem 1: Get a map of your county and the surrounding counties. Find a set of twisty roads far from the city and explore. You'll soon find your own place to enjoy your lovely shark. Also find some 928 guys in your area and get them to join you. That's what we do here in Mn, and it's a blast.

Answer to Problem 2: Let em go. it is so stupid when thy try to race, because they have NO idea what the hell they are up against. but they somehow know it's special. Too dumb to ask or show some posative interest, so they want to race instead? let 'em go. They'll look supid when they lose, but even more stupid when you let them leave smoke and rubber at the green light all by themselves - Ruf

I'm with Ashfin.

I've chased a few Ferraris in my time (and a Bugatti once when I was really lucky), not to race but to watch and listen.

You could go all stealth, like me and attract less attention: black on black, tinted windows and black wheels. Knock on wood, the only stop in this car I had I got a warning for doing 80 in a 30, and the cop gave me a compliment on the dark wheels!!
p.s. where've you been? We want to see your car at the next 928 meeting, Larz Anderson maybe?

Just add an RMB. In my experience, the sound of an "uncorked" 928 is usually enough to keep them from even thinking of challenging you.

Or else disconnect the passenger-side speed limiter....

i'll be the first to admit if I see a F car or another P car, I'll run with it for a bit. not to race, but just to enjoy some fine car camaraderie. i don't tailgate or drive stupid, but I'd never pass up a chance to hang with a Testarossa or some other thoroughbred for a few miles.

Good to hear you are enjoying the 928!! A DE or track day would be even more fun!! Then you could learn the 928's limits in a safe enviroment! Of course Open Road Racing is the best...but its a bit of a drive from you :>(

Some great replies and suggestions!

Passenger side speed limiter....that had me on the floor. Actually my wife really isn't difficult, it just wasn't a safe situation and who knows if this guy was playing with a full deck of cards or (most likely) not.

Brian I am thinking DE will help me safely find the limits.

I am also going to start mapping out some nice back roads further away from the city.

By the way if all goes right this week the shark will make trip to MA where I have found a garage for it. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at the next GTG. When is the next GTG anyways?
