lifter replacement
Hi All...
after giving my car a rislone rinse... my car seems to be louder than when I started... I ran it for a bit to get it nice and hot... did an oil change
There did seems to be some magnetic sludge on my drain plug... no grit... just a kind of dusty sludge...
anyway I used a stethoscoe and the sound seems to be from the driver head...
can lifters be renewed with the head in the car... I imagine the cams have to come out...
any suggestions on locating which lifters are noisey... ... lifters seem to be kind of pricey... so replaceing them all sounds prohibitive... I may as well pull the engine and rebuild the heads...
Thanks,
Loren Olson

Noisey... i will try and post a clip...
before I was running some lucas oil additive and it seemed to quiet it a little...
but since the rislone treatment I am running mobile 15-50... I think it is a new product called extended life (15K miles rated)... that was the closest thing they had...

What is your oil pressure? Bad con rod bearings would cause noisy lifters in an american V8, and I believe others have stated this is also true for a 928. I would get some Castrol GTX 20/50 and a can of STP or the Lucas additive.
Adding rislone to oil is like adding paint thinner to paint. It really thins it out, and reduces film strength. The real danger with rislone is that in a really sludged up engine it can put a lot of dirt in the oil in a hurry.
I would change the oil again and cross your fingers. I did change out the lifters in a Ford 302, only to figure out that the bearings were the real problem. I hope this is not your problem, but low oil pressure at medium rpms might be an indicator. LOL, you need a better mentor than I.

If you want to get at the lifters (hydraulic tappets), they can be easily removed with the engine in place. Unbolt the cam bearing bridges first, and remove the cams with the chain tensioner. The tappets slide out with a good magnet.
I just ran into this with my engine rebuild. I'm NOT sure if its the cause of your noise, but these tappets can be cleaned out if you're so inclined. I found 28 of my 32 tappets 'stuck' in place with sludge. They should normally have a spring function which gets dampened with oil as they press down on the valves.
There's a center 3-piece 'piston' under each tappet that fills with oil. (with a tiny ball valve and spring). It can be carefully removed and cleaned out.
good luck.
