Default Race Car Project: Frame-mounted rear wing

I have to thank Tom Falkenberg for the inspiration of this idea. He sent me some pictures of his rear wing which was mounted through the pillars to the rear frame horns. I put a spin on his idea (because his mounts were not water tight)... I think you guys will like the result.

1. Mock up wing
2. Cut templates for the separate pieces
3. Cut pieces
4. Spend a lot of time trying to perfectly orient the two pieces which will be inserted through the pillars
5. Cut the pillars to fit the 3/16" piece of steel, tightly enough to weld around
6. Weld mounts to frame (on top of a flat 3/16" piece)
7. Stitch weld plate to body in 1" increments, taking care to not warp the sheetmetal
8. Grind off weld around body, finish edges for mount
9. Drill holes, mount wing, cut aluminum end plates, etc.
10. Mount wing!

The wing is adjustable from 0-10 degrees. It's not a fancy GT3 cup wing like Kibort stole, but it should work pretty nicely for my setup. The mounts are STOUT. A little on the heavy side, but I'm not nickle-and-diming on the weight, especially something at the rear. I'll probably make another set of the exterior mounts out of aluminum when I get the time... I just had some spare steel around so I went on and cut them out of that for the time being. When I go to paint the car, I'm going to put a little filler on the joint between the body and mount. I don't have any pictures of the junction, but it looks almost factory the way it blends in.

Sorry for the low-quality pics... friggin windows doesn't even include a good program to resize pictures, so I had to resort to some crappy free download. I'll try to get a better program to edit before the next write-up. The next one will be on my rear fenders--flared 2" on each side with some extensive hammer/dolly work.

Ok, let me be the first to say.." holy sheeet of metal Batman"!

Have you thought of maybe adding a few "LARGE HOLES" to lighten it up a little

meh... too much trouble. Like I said, I will be making the outer mounts out of aluminum later down the road when I have some more time. Also, I have to meet a minimum weight for a certain series I want to run in the future, and weight on the back is better than weight on the front.

Edit: You know, now that you say that, I might cut some holes in the inner piece since it is permanent... I have a 1.75" hole saw left over from the cage notching, so I might work some art with that. Thanks for the tip; I'm not sure why I didn't think of that.

Have you not heard of moveable ballast (lead)? If you build it to the required weight, than when and if you should decide to move your weight around you will have to add more than the required weight, making you over weight.

To each his own, good luck and FWIW, nice looking welds!

Shouldn't be a problem

That's heavy man... no really, it looks really heavy!

If you are reconsidering the weight, you might either grind out the steel supports, substitute an L-bracket, and use aluminum for the supports. Or, cut the current bracket down, and drill for mounting the aluminum supports.

I think I would have made the supports come up to the under side of the body, and have the wing bolt through the body into the supports.

Sheesh guys, get off my grill! I'm estimating these mounts weigh 10 pounds more than your average wing mounts. Factor in that I am taking your advice and cutting a few holes, then making the outer part from aluminum in a few months, that will take off another 2-3 pounds or so.

This car will weigh under 2800 pounds dry; I know what I'm doing... my response was not an attempt to undermine the importance of weight.

I'll be honest, I've really put some heart into this car, and I don't appreciate some of the comments in this thread thus far.

Edit- Ken, that response wasn't directed at you, but no, I'm not reconsidering my design in the least. I am pretty excited about what I did, and the wing is removable while the body is still water-tight.

Firstly, you posted on a public-forum where people can respond; what did you expect?

Secondly, nobody on this forum within this thread has been mean-spirited towards you and your work, IN THE LEAST.

Nobody YET! Let me be the first to say.... I think it looks cool.

But how much downforce are you looking to produce? That looks like it could take a couple thousand pounds.
