Default Alpine CD Deck and Phillips Carin GPS

Both are aftermarket installs and mounted in the hatch in a glued and carpeted box. The CD is a six tray stack and one of the Trays is stuck in mid transfer, so the cassett containing the 6 and whatever is in the trays is not coming out w/o getting power back or removing the entire device from its nest. Perhaps this stuck tray caused a blown fuse but I checked the CE panel and all looks good there. Fuse in the deck? I Can't see how the unit comes out of the box in the the hatch; I fear it is glued in. I assume a multimeter, a screwdriver, and a couple valium is what's required to trace the wires back to the center console or wherever these are wired in. Anyone with experience in these matters?

Unscrew the case on the changer and with a couple of long screwdrivers you should be able to get the cd un jammed with some finesse. The fuse is probably an in line deal in addition to the 928 radio fuse, so you will have to check the cd changer and the back of the head unit.

Also, my suggestion is to cut the carpet back with an "x" pattern on the underside of the box, then cut a rectangular access hole in the box and then you will need to stop by a carpet shop and get a replacement piece for the access door. Once you fold the carpet into the seam where the access door is, you will need to staple or glue that and it should give you a good seal, in case the box is used for bass speakers. To get a good double seal, buy a piece of .040" sheet aluminum from the hardware store and cut it 3/4" oversize to match the door, then screw them together and then to the main portion of the box with flush head black trim screws.

Steve-

If I was installing that system from scratch, the power would feed from the battery to a distribution block in the back, and never get near the CE panel for that. Look for that.

Alternative is to give the seller Matt a call and find out who did the install. In fact, that info should be in your docs pack. They could tell you what the power distribution is like. Most better installers keep pretty good notes in a file for later reference, and in case they need to do another one.

Let me know if there's anything I can do for you from this end.

For those playing along at home, this is what Steve is wrestling with:

Bob: I do have a paper on one of the installs, but I'm not sure which item they handled. I also have phone # for the Carin item. I'd like to try and trace the electricals before calling so I can describe to them where the power is tapped in. The CE looks clean, but there is so much crap stashed here/thre that I'm still finding electro boxes stashed under the dash and the passenger seat side panel with various wires connected and disconnected, e.g., above the LH. I'll try to take pictures next weekend. Did you realize that besides the two cell phones there is a handset mounted on center console next to drivers knee?

I'll take pictures next weekend. It's impossible to diagnose these problems further w/o pictures and a better knowledge of what goes where. I love the car, but I'm tempted to return the rear deck to its original condition.

Matt described that 'extra' handset as part of the GPS system. I didn't play with any of that, as my thinking was along the lines of how tough it would be to get another dash in there. The cradles on the sides could easily have been anchored to the tunnel instead of the console. but when you are the installer putting this stuff in, you aren't thinking about what will happen when it comes out. There was a ton of money spent on all that stuff and the installation, that's for sure.

The Big Factor that keeps me from putting an amp on the deck, a sub in the spare wheel, and new drivers in the doors is the amount of work it would take to restore it to original. Just replacing the drivers just behind the front seats was a couple hours, keeping the original mounts and grills. A friend who's in the Audio business says he can fit a nice-sounding system in the car using Focal drivers. Can I keep all the original grills so it looks original? Why would you want to do that? he asks... Different strokes.

Bob: My concern with "original" is with function. This install looks nice but the ***** on the panel over the woofer, over the tire, over the battery, (see where this goes?) are not user friendly. One wouldn't need access to either tire or battery very often, but when you do, on this unit regular pliers will not turn the *****. I guess high end users just call for a tow and the PO wasn't going to install a battery himself. I have added a pair small needle nose pliers to the tool kit. Warren's suggestion, though good, are N/A in this application. No screws are visible, I may have to destroy the village to save it.

thanks, to you both -- I'll follow up next week.

The Cd changer has studs on the back of the face plate that probably pass through holes in the box and are held in place by washers and nuts.
The easiest way to get the changer out as someone else suggested is to cut a hole in the deck above it so you can gain access.
Also, to remove the 6 pack you are going to have to get power back on it, any other attempts to remove will likely screw up the transfer mechanism.
