Default A/C PROBLEM

A/C HAS BEEN WORKING GOOD. CAR SAT FOR 2 MONTHS AND NOW IT IS BARELY COOL INSTEAD OF ICE COLD. REFRIGERANT LEAK? Need a charge? I guess I am hoping for that instead of compressor or worse problems. Advi9ce appreciated. Thanks.

is your compressor coming on?
without a full charge the pressure switch will turn you compressor on and off alot which will only get the air 'luke warm'
if its 'super hot' your compressor isn't coming on at all
turn the car on and watch your compressor, see if it comes on and how long it does and go from there

Thumbs up

mackmorrowjr... what model year? Check fuses, relays.
Look at the (clean, by Qtip) sight glass. See any bubbles
streaming thru ? A few(refrigerant prob'y ok)? Many
(need refrigerant)? In either case, compressor is working.

Zip ? Get your hi/lo pressures checked.

Ceedee... super hot ? How's your heater valve ? Under the air
box, against the firewall.

G'luck all.

Put the gauges on the system and find out if there's still some freon in the system. Troubleshoot from there.

Can't a wire from the jump post in the engine compartment to the compressor clutch terminal function to tell you if the clutch is working?

Also, make certain that the flap in the passenger footwell is opening properly. Mine was not and the air from outside was being cooled ( I was trying to cool California....as if it wasn't cool enough already ) Now I have a stick stuck up the hole under the dash to keep the *#$%@&*$%@ flap open and recirculate the air in the car. That lowered the temperature sufficiently to keep from igniting while traveling aross Nevada at noon.

Yup, been there, done that. Last year I broke the AC compressor when the car bottomed out in Nevada at ....a brisk pace....and I spent the rest of the 3000 miles to Pennsylvania and back to California without AC. Sauna bath in the extreme. Miserable. Couldn't close the windows all the way so the wind noise got irritating. I never want to do that again.

Like Zoltan and Macreel said, you have to start at the beginning and see if you have compressor action. If you do, then as Dr. Bob said you need to check the gauges. Your heater valve may be bad but usually you will get cool air first thing in the morning before the engine warms up the heater core, if your refrigeration system is OK.
Good luck.

All the above...
R12 or R134?

Do a search for the ALL the A/C info you can handle. Use Earl Gillstrom as the person posting..he is THE expert.

Assuming your compressor is working and you have enough coolant in the system....then a vac leak causing the heater valve to open.....very common

Or if it's the stock heater valve, the internals are just warped and the valve itself isn't working right - replace with metal one - you can get it at NAPA or 928 Specialists has one.
