Default Rear shocks, which way do they cant? FIXED

Ok, I really wanted to get this done tonight, but I can't get things lined up to put the long shock/suspension bolt all the way thru the rear.

The Koni and Boge rear shocks have a slight cant or angle from verticle, when the mounting base is placed on the workbench. The mounting hole on the bottom is mounted fore and aft, with the bolt going forward through the hole.

My question, is which way does the cant or small angle from verticle go, toward the front or toward the rear?

Hi they will only fit one way it should be obvious, you could try to look at the old shocks for guidance, and the beveled washers have the bevel facing away from the bottom of the shock

Old shocks are off the car, both sides and of course, and with my halfsheimers, I can't remember which way they came off. If the base is perfectly horizontal, as on the fronts, the angles to the body would each be 90 degrees.

With the rears, one anger is less than 90 degrees, and the other is more. Not sure if the more or less than 90 degrees goes to the rear.

Anyone been there, done that? The WSM isn't much help with this one.

Bill, just got under it and looked. Less is to the rear and more is to the front.

Note also that the top mount is asymmetric, and will only go into the bolt holes ONE way. My first one went straight in, second one took me ages before I realized what was going on....

Ummm....NOPE - When you're tired and dirty, they WILL go in the wrong way!! BTDT...
That being said - once you put them in the wrong way - it will look 'funny'.

Finally got back to it tonight. All by myself, it took about 45 minutes to work the bolt into the appropriate holes. Getting the conical washer to go in and stay put is the hardest part, besides lining up all the holes. Thanks to those who chimed in. Yes the WSM page 42-14 does show the correct alignment of the canted shock tower. Big thanks to Tony for his writeup and to CaptnEarl for his writeup.

Didn't need to remove the front or rear brakes to do this at all. I'll tackle the passenger side tomorrow night.

I'm getting a flashback. I had a big problem getting everything lined up and I was going to just leave out some of those pesky conical washers. Of course that would be WRONG. Finally when you solve the puzzle, it all makes sense. That happens a lot with these cars!

Dave, I just keep telling myself that a 928 keeps me out of bars and out of trouble. Although my bar tab would probably be less than the things I keep doing to the 928.

Bill S...........congrats on getting them on; I had tons of fun also.

Have you had a chance to drive the car? If so perhaps you can comment on Bill ***** thread.

Malcolm, I haven't gotten the passenger side on yet. Should be tonight, after work. I can't wait to drive it. I've set the Koni's to 3 turns from soft (2 from full hard).

Bill,

I hope you put the conical washers in the right place - on either side of the hub carrier NOT on either side of the shock absorber. Tony's site has a misleading picture.

Yes, I know the conical washers go on either side of the carrier. I'm using so many different resouces, including the WSM.

I just gave up for the night. There are just some things you need two sets of strong arms and hands for....and the bolt for the rear shock, passing through the trailing arm and the hub carrier, plus two conical washers is one of them. It's just too much for one person, especially in 90+ degree heat and humidity. I'm getting pissed off, so it's time to come inside the air conditioned house, and have a beer. I feel better now.

Oh Bill,
Man I feel your pain. Get some rest and it'll drop right in come morning. Especially in the cooler morning air. I think I used a floor jack as a third hand to help accomplish this. My big strong son tried to help but the jack was better and didn't complain or comment on my creative and colorful language.
