Default 928 Key Cut in Seattle Area

I bought a blank key on ebay and now need to find a place in the north Seattle area to cut a 928 4-axis key. My friendly local key shop, who identified my key as "that is a Porsche 928 key, we don't have the equipment to cut that", does not know who has the equipment locally.

Any suggestions?

Sorry you had to buy the key. Look up http://keysforclassics.com/ Stuart runs this place out fo Australia. All you need to do is send him a close-up photo of your current key and hell send you one for a about $50 including shipping - maybe more maybe less, I forget. But they do work and you don't have to be without your keys. Several rennlisters have used his service with great satisfaction - including me.

I've often wondered how many of the key blanks bought on ebay are actually ever cut.

Doesn't Jim Bailey still run the Wizard of 928 Key Cutting Shop? I was hoping this year at Sharktoberfest, or another time I'm down there, I could have one made. They seem to wear out. I have two keys. One works for about two months and the other won't turn. Then they reverse, and the other one works and the first one sticks in the ignition. Don't ask for a scientific explanation of this BS. It simply happens. I need another spare one. I carry two in my pocket at all times for lockouts while the ignition is on and the windows shut.

What say you Jim??

If you want to go North, "Pacific Lock and Safe" in Vancouver cuts 928 keys. Or you can FedEx them the original and blanks.

They are very good. I have had 928 keys cut there for years. $15 ea.

Cheers,
Michael

Heh, I have two ebay Silca blanks I never found a way to get cut. Even when I was in Germany, I decided not to bother bringing the 928 keys with my and what did I find two doors away from my B&B in Dusseldorf? Yes, and old lock shop with a machine that could cut 928 keys. It's two doors West (towards the Rhine) from Mühlenstrasse 15, tell 'em Paulchen sent you.

Tommy,

I live in North Seattle. I go to Home Depot on 120th and Aurora for key duplication. I don't know if they would be able to do a Porsche key. But hey, it's not rocket science.

Good Luck

Have you ever actually looked at your key? Maybe they were replaced, who knows. The 928 key is cut on the quarters or edges (all 4) not just on 2 like a lot of others. Newer security keys are cut in a channel and/or have a RF chip. I have gone to one of the top key cutters in the DC area and they didn't have a machine that could cut on the quarters. The local p-car dealer couldn't do it either.

Imagine this. A production run of 20K cars shipped all over the world, lets figure 2 dealers per state in the US alone, well that leaves you with, assuming that each dealer got 50 cars or 1/4 of the total production. Would you buy a key cutter for 50 cars? Even if the US got 1/2 of the cars produced that would only increase the # to 100 cars per dealer or 1/2 of all cars produced, that's less than 20 cars per dealer per year over the 928's entire production run. Most dealers chose not to is my guess.

Sorry to get abstract on ya but to me it is amazing how rare our care actually is.

You are correct that cutting the key is not rocket science and the machine it self is not special but what you do need is the special adaptor to hold the key blank and master key and it is 928 specific which is why so few can do it.

Note... Mr. Pichai & Scott do a great job.

'course they're in Anaheim !

G'luck.

p.s. Mark... The rear glove box wouldn't open.
Remember, no key. I didn't want to 'rip'
it open and the button wouldn't move,
so finally I 'picked' it. The owner's manual
showed a photo - I assumed it showed 'open' and
I had just LOCKed it. 'Picked' it back a quarter turn,
shot some penetrant to it, gave it a few gentle taps
thru a wooden dowel and TAA Dah, the button pushed
right in.

Now the rear glove box is open and useful. No mysteries
inside, no $$$, no love letters, just Calif dust & dirt.

Broadway Locksmith on Broadway and John (Capitol Hill) 206-329-4600 They have 928 blanks and can also retumble used locks for your exsiting key. They are not open Saturdays. It's the only shop we use for keys!!!
