Default Stuck in 4th gear

Hi Folks:

My 84S 5-spd has always had touchy shifting. I replaced the shift and boot with the short-throw variety and have been largely happy with the results. Obviously, however, there is less torque with which to work on this new shifter.

Of late, I've had instances when I've rolled to a stop light, leaving the shift in 4th gear. Then, when the light turns green, I simply cannot get the car out of 4th gear. On a couple of occasions, I've had to shut off the car to get the gear disengaged.

If I try to get the car out of 4th gear while the car is still rolling to a stop, I typically have no trouble whatsoever.

Synchros?

Thanks and Peace,
Tim

Hi Try putting the trans in neutral before coming to a stop then you can leave your foot off the clutch that will mean less wear on the the TOB and thrust bearing... Also you might want to bleed the clutch as it might be dragging IE not releasing all the way so the clutch will remain engaged, and you might have to readjust your intermediate plate

Tim....When I had my 84 I experienced the same issue. The lockup wouldn't happen all the time just once in a while. Is this the same with you?..........After looking into the problem I determined that two things were wrong. (1).....The dual clutch was out of alignment....and (2) ...the short shaft, that the clutch rode on, was badly worn. The shaft was grooved and therefore the clutch would stick. ........
Unfortunately or fortunately depending how you look at it.....I lost the 84 in a collision in 2004.......I didn't get the chance to repair the problem. Tim , I hope this is not your problem but if it is you might want to replace a few other parts in there while you have it apart. Goodluck..............Bill

Okay, so it seems that I need to take a closer look at the clutch. Never touched that thing before, so this will be a new adventure. I'm grateful for the leads.

Thanks,
Tim
