wearing a bra?

They're a pain to put on and off for car washes and unless it's a black car, it just doesn't look that great (IMO). My paint on the front bumper and front edge of the hood are in need of a respray so instead I've used a bra to cover the ugly paint when I first got the car. But, the past year I've just left it off for the car wash convienience.

I went back and forth on mine. When I had the stock ( black ) rear spoiler on I think it looked ok. When I changed to a GTS spoiler ( white to match the car ) the bra then looked out of place to me and I never put it back on.

Charlie: You need to take a closer look at the Sharks at the Lake pics. I own the Marine Blue metallic one and it sports a bra almost always (front end, front of hood paint damage) to hide the uglys. Do something before damage occurs. Gerry

Keep a conventional bra on at your paint's peril. I had one I used all the time on my 914/6 when I was on open road trips. But then I took it off one day to find scratches all over the hood from the bra. I trashed that bra right then and there. It had been wet earlier in some rain on the way to the Oklahoma Parade. For some reason unclear to me it seems the water and bra are not a compatible combination. Now my car just gets sandblasted, and the 928 appears as salt and pepper on the front bumper. When, and if, I ever repaint it, I will get a clear bra. The only way to travel in my opinion.

I have a two piece Colgan bra that I use for all road trips. I highly recommend it. Fits snug and has performed well at high speeds. Once the trip is over, it comes off. I had a bad experience some years ago with moisture under the bra, car sitting in the sun and paint discoloration.

I always use mine on long road trips and take it off as soon as I get there - likewise when I return home.

I don't think a clear bra covers up bad paint. I believe the people using a clear bra are leaving them on. The clear bra jobs I saw in Denver (OCIC) were well done and on some very expensive cars.

Two different topics: 1) Vinyl 'temporary' bra, 2) Clear (3M) 'permanent' bra.
The 3M film - marketed under a number of different brands - is a glue-on transparent film that is never - for all practical purposes - removed. It does a very good job of protecting the paint from rock chips. We have the stuff on our Audis. On one of them, after 80k miles, it is time to replace it. The clear bra will not cover up bad paint - its clear. So, there is no point in putting the clear bra on anything other than new or almost-new paint. The clear bra is about twice as expensive as the vinyl bra if professionally installed.
The 'temporary' vinyl bras work very well if correctly tightly fitted and if used correctly. The correct way is to put a clean bra on a clean car, drive, and then once parked take the bra off. If it rains more than a few sprinkles during the day you have to stop and take the bra off. When you park after the day's trip you have to take the bra off unless you know that the outside temperature will not dip below the dew point. The next morning, before you put the bra on, you need to clean the inside of the bra with a brush and vacuum, and clean the fenders. If any moisture - from rain - or condensation - from low temps in a humid climate - gets between the bra and the paint and stays there while the engine heat bakes it off, your paint will suffer and suffer pretty quickly. Clean bra on a clean car at the beginning of the day. Bra off and cleaned at the end of the day. It is a pain in the a$$. But, Iris never travels far in 'free spirit' mode and after 55k-miles the front bumper and mirrors are still almost like new.
