guys, if he has the time and money, and really does have the prerequisite love for 928's, then why not indulge him here. I say go for it. what is the worst that will happen? he will become one more unsatisfied owner, and dump the car back on the market for someone else, likely a little better than where he started? or perhaps he will long for something better after getting a taste of this on, and get another one using this one as parts? and best case scenario, he actually returns this to running order, as a track car or full restore? then there is another 928 saved from scrap. guys, if he understands getting this car up and running will take much time and money, encourage him. lets help him. lets use our collective knowledge to make his hobby more enjoyable.

So long as he understands that he is going to have $10-15k (and HUNDREDS of hours of labor) in a car that will be worth AT MOST $6k....then let him go for it.

Otherwise - we end up with another disgruntled newbie who will verbally trash our cars, adding to the misconceptions already out there...

Mark, I completely agree. I would not be offering the advice to move forward if he does not fully understand alot of money will go into this car that will never come out again... well, at the very least not for a long time.

but, suppose he does end up dissatisfied? we warned him, he has all of the information available before making the leap... if he still bashes our cars, would we really care? does it trully bother you when someone that ignorant speaks up? after all, yes it keeps the value low, but it keeps it low enough that most of us who would not otherwise be able to aford these amazing cars can.

these cars become a labor of love. rational thought is not really entertained when asking yourself if you want to spend 5-7k for some forced air on a car you may not have payed that much for to begin with.

ceedee, I don't want you to think I figure you will go the unhappy route... I am just making a point to everyone that if you do, it doesnt really hurt us. I for one, will offer you whatever help I can if you decide to go ahead. I will not say I told you so when you are banging your head because an almost insignifigant little plastic part actually is crucial, and costs about 10x what you figured it would... because, we told you so.

as an afterthought, I have spend double the amount on my 81 that it cost to buy it in the first 18 months of owning it. do I regret it? no. not one bit. and she isnt running right now. in fact, I bought another one, just so when one is down, I will still have one to drive, and one to work on.

hehehe. thats kinda funny... I said "when" one is down. yes, things break on a 25 year old car that is driven hard... but, if everyone kept up like my newest baby's PO did, they would break alot less often. props again paul. she's beautiful.

i really appreciate all your input. i used to own a 87 944, well that was in 97
but i did so love the car...was an awesome driver and very well build. maybe just a little on the heavy side for the size engine, but hey...
i always liked the 928 and wanted to have one
i've seen another one

that is nicer looking, and so i might end up with the one i was talking about here for parts, who knows.
but i would not go to the extemt of talking trash about any porsche, they are just to awesome, and did i mention i used to own a range rover? talking bout high maintenance...lol

Having a 928 as a project/hobby is good. I have one and a half 928s for projects/hobby. But it is wise to have at least one well maintained 928 in driving condition to drive and enjoy, to help ease the frustration of working and spending and cussing the projects. You need the reminder of just how much fun driving these cars is.

HI the thing i have realised is that if you can find an old running car then it is better to have more than a few previous owners as each successive owner will have emptied his pockets to procure the necessary parts to make the car a driver only to be stopped cold by the realisation that he is still going to have to spend many thousands more to make the shark a top performer in looks and mechanics, and so the car gets updated parts and then driven a bit then sold to the next unsuspecting victim. Uh I mean restorer. SO if you have lots of time, and a whole lot of money then buy the cheapest running example you can find that has had atleast 3 or more PO`s, this will be a good place to start on your Hobby. OR just look around for a very nice S4 and pay most of the cash now so you can drive the shark while you fix up the little things like window switches and loose mirrors, broken trim and odmeter gears. Happy hunting. Stan

Shane hit it on the head. really, thats the where I am at in my 928 life. ceedee, that second one looks nice, but check it out real good... what year is it? it has an early style front clip, and the rear end an S4 style. in my experiance, this can indicate a collision in the rear at some point. my 81 had all kinds of bondo I never knew about till I got into an accident with it.

ceedee - that last one that you posted the pics of looks MUCH better.
That being said - be sure and CARFAX it, and GET A PPI!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rear has been replaced with an S4 butt on that car. If it was wrecked, you wanna make sure it was put back together right!

BEST piece of advice you will ever hear: Buy the BEST 928 you can afford!

You will have all the support/knowledge/even occasional free parts here on the R'list. a GREAT group of folks that are EXTREMELY passionate about thier cars.

PS - Plz post where you are located. It is likely that someone on the list will know of a good shark near to you.
