Default Clear Turn Signals

While at the Denver OCIC I purchased a set of clear lenses for my front turn signals from Nicole (Hooked On Cars). I love the lens and think it makes the car look less dated. My problem is that I needed to put amber bulbs in to be legal ( I think). Once i put the amber bulbs in i lost the clear look as you can see the amber bulb color refracted in the mirrored turn signal housing, especially if the car is sitting in the sun. Does anyone have a trick to prevent this and allow the lenses to look clear yet still blink amber when in use? I was thinking perhaps i could paint the tip of the bulb silver but the heat would probably bake the paint off. What say you?

On the pre-S4's, those bulbs are only for turn signals. On my old '82, I left the clear bulbs in. On my GT, that bulb is always on when the lights are on, so it's really important to have the amber bulb. I used the SilverStar bulbs. Not 100% satisfied as there is a bluish tint that comes through when the bulb is off, but they are definately amber when lit. I think Randy painted some amber bulbs with silver spray paint. Not sure how it's holing up - but becasue yours is only for the turn signal, I think it would be fine. YMMV.

Here's the pics.

BTW, the black bumperettes are now gone and the red portion that shows through the clear lens by the bumperette was covered up with aluminum foil tape (like used for heating and cooling ductwork).

Yeah, maybe i could get away with some paint on the bulb since it is not on continuously. I did notice the Silverstone bulbs at the auto store but HOLY SHNIKEYS, $22 for a set of turn signal bulbs!

you only need a very light coat of silver paint to hide the bulb. too much will change it's color...

Easy, cheap and they look good for the life of the bulb:

Hi Ben:

It was great to meet you, and thanks for your purchase! I'm glad you like the lenses and agree that the amber bulbs are not the best solution.

The box with the lenses should have contained an information sheet that detaied the different bulb types available.

My recommendation is to find some chromed bulbs that emit amber light when lit - that's what I'm using in my car as well.

Until I find a good vendor to supply me with those I suggest you search ebay for "bulb 1157 chrome". If, as Andrew points out, this is only a single filament bulb, you need to look for 1156 instead.

Also note that I now have matching clear side marker lenses available.

Nicole:

1157 is the dual-filament combo bulb. 1156 is the single-filament bulb.

Thanks Nicole!! Now I have another thing to do while on vacation. I suppose I should give Jim a call and get some new lense gaskets ordered up.

Can someone tell me the correct turn signal bulb for a '88 S4?
Randy's old post indicated the p/n was 2357A, Nicole was suggesting 1157, and Sylvania's website has 7506 as the right bulb. Does each manufacturer use a different number? I thought these numbers were standardized for bulbs regardless of manufacturer.

1157 is not the same bulb used by the factory, but the only one available in amber that works in the S4 and later lmodels. My understanding is that 1157 is 21 and 8 Watts, while the original bulbs were 21 and 5 Watts. Many rennlisters have run 1157 for quite some time now without problems.

I have the (?) wrong wattage silverstars in mine. Like Andrew Im not entirely happy with mine because I do still get some of the blue tint when the bulb is off. The bulbs have lasted what... about 4 months now no problems. Since I have a euro, I also have the clear side markers. Those I had to lightly *brush* on some touch up yellow paint. Looks great.

Nicole* Still waiting on the new clear front and rear markers!! :-)
