Default A surprising dessert after dinner, a 350Z.

I was returning from NYC last night, on the Parkway when, by happenstance, a 350Z and I, in my box-stock '82 928 3sp auto, exited from the EZ pass gates at exactly the same time, accelerating together from about 15 mph, which, of course, turned into a full-blown drag race. We stayed pretty much neck and neck to 60; he gained about a 1/4 car length by 70, when I began just walking away from him until he seemed to back off and give up somewhere north of 110 (above 100, I must admit I don't take much time watching the speedo), when he was quite some distance behind.

I would have expected a very different outcome, since the 350Z is reputed to be blisteringly fast. Am I mistaken in this? He didn't seem to miss any shifts (it might have been an automatic... impossible to tell), but ultimately just couldn't seem to muster the power in the higher rpms, where my 928 really comes into its own.

if you're driving a euro, it seems like it might be right. if us, seems like the 350 should beat you pretty decent.

My thoughts exactly... I'm driving a US model, and would like to repeat this if only to validate or disprove the 928s ability vis-a-vis the 350Z.

i love how everyone instantly jumps to conclusions about a victory that someone 'maybe should' have lost to.
Has anyone ever heard of an upset? does anyone watch sports?
for all we know this guy was doing 15 but in 3rd cause of the highway and just floored it without a downshift, and rhys steps on his auto and downshifts to 1st and takes off?
Maybe the guys threw a rod, who cares? a win is a win and its not like they were sitting on a prept race track drag racing for money.
Nice story

Now if we had just been going for pinks I'd sell the Z and get a nice GTS.

350Z convertible (first numbers I found via Motor Trend):

0-60 5.8seconds
1/4 14.2 seconds @ 98.2mph
0-100 15.3 seconds

The coupe isn't much faster. So good job!! Sushi can be tasty.
