Default Best way to pack/ship glass?

Hey everybody, I need help regarding my other thread about the A-hole who broke my window. Another 'lister is offering up his window to replace mine. What is the best for him to pack the window and ship it so it doesn't get broken?

Very carefully! (sorry. couldn't resist).

Seriously, though, aside from a crate, I would pack in soft foam or lots-o-bubble wrap, then place in a box. Then I woudl use either foam peanuts or that chipped styrofoam that Porken uses and pack that box in another box surounded by that stuff. It's a crap load of work unfortunately, but hopefully that would make it safe enough.

Best for him is take it to one of those UPS stores and have them pack and ship it at your expense. Best for you is he packs it VERY CAREFULLY double thick box much packing material around the edges and takes it to UPS or possibly Greyhound bus for terminal to terminal shipping. Note there are two colors of glass bronze and green tint.

Thanks Jim, just out of curiousity, what is the logic behind the two glass tints? I know there are two, but is like green for lighter color cars and bronze for dark colored cars?

I agree to have UPS pack it for you. If you pack it and it breaks, regardless of you purchasing insurance, they'll claim that the fact that it broke is evidence it wasn't packaged properly. Not worth the hassle.

Wrap in a sheet and place on a piece of cut to size plywood or many layers of cardborad and tape securely, then

Wrap generously in bubble pack and tape securely, then

Fold a layer of cardboard over around this lump and tape securely, then fold another layer of cardboard at 90º to the first and tape securely. Essentially you've made a solid box out of the thing you're shipping.

Do this right and you can ship it up the Congo and expect it to arrive unscathed. Actually, I guess if you're really taking about shipping upriver to Kurtz, you might want to make a 2x4 and plywood box to place the wrapped package in, as cardboard can melt. But, otherwise ...
