Default Transmission problems.... *video

Alright, I woke up this morning got ready for work, got in the car and started her up as usual back out of the driveway, drive out of the neighborhood and the car wont upshift. I got about a mile away and turned around and drove home, I jacked the car up and popped the shift cable off and I put the lever into the "D" position and it will not light up.

I replaced the shift cable a few weeks ago and the D light never lit up so I just figured the cable wasnt adjusted right.

I did a search before I made this thread and its ironic that I found this thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ighlight=shift

It is also very weird that the tranny that was rebuilt and has a 2 year warranty and the warranty is up July 30th. Assuming the worst, am I going to have to take the car to texas for them to honor their warranty?

Update: The car will not upshift at all, it will downshift into 1st though.

I gave Freddies Transmission Service in Dallas, TX a call. I am going to fax them the invoice and they offered to fix it but they want me to send them the transmission. I dont even know where to begin with this.

Hi the D light not lighting is probably a burned out bulb in the dash pod, it might help if you try to re adjust the cable per the WSM I believe it gets adjusted in neutral

I will try and readjust the cable, I do not have the WSM so I do not know the procedure.

Ross.... Bad boy. Look up Jim Morehouse and get the CDs. I'll see if I can post the proceedure for you.

(BTW, good job in tactfully referring to the old post )

Whitefox,
Have you confirmed that problem is not due to low trans fluid level? Procedure to check level is awkward but important and fluid level range is narrow. Low level will prevent upshifts. Do not overfill as this causes foaming and possible slippage.

Thanks Andrew, I went out and it is adjusted correctly. I will also order the CDs from Jim if this car doesnt make me kill myself.

My first post might not have been very clear I had just woken up, when I put the car in D it will drive it just wont shift into a higher gear. Yesterday it would upshift but only at 4k RPMs.

DG I have not yet checked the fluid level, I will read up on the procedure now.

Excuse my ignorance but is this the transmission fluid reservoir?

If it is, am I completley out of fluid?

The guide Andy posted does not apply in some areas. Transmission must be at operating temp when checking the level.

Hi get some brake cleaner and get under the car preferrably when it is cold as you will be spraying a flammable spry near the exhaust pipes, clean off the plastic tank and you will see marks on the forward facing part they indicate where the level is ..Warning it can only be checked whith the engine running, dont open it without the engine running or there is a possibility that the fluid can drain back into the tank and it will overflow the cap when it is removed, after cleaning put the car on a level surface if you cant do this try backing the car onto a curb with both of either side wheels up on it so you can slide under the car to view the trans tank ,Start the car and put the shifter thru every detent return to park, with E brake on and engine running slide under the car and view tank, if you cant see the level try removing the cap and sticking in your finger to find the level , if it is low add ATF till it comes up to about the middle of the tank then run the trans thru the gears again then recheck the level, also look for on the drivers side of the trans that the vacuum line is connected to the green colored part this is the vacuum modulator you might want to pull the line off to see if your getting vacuum with the engine running, let us know what you find

Ross, look at the other end of the reservoir. That's where the markings are. Should be between the top two.
