Crankshaft gear removal- Myth or magic?
How and the %&#@ can the front crankshaft gear be removed when the fingers of a puller are too large to fit in between the gear itself and the plastic cover in behind it? Does there exist a special Porsche tool? Am I the only one that has had hardened arteries over this seemingly straightforward procedure? A "easy" step on the way to a shiny new front main seal? Ne ne. Porco dio!

It supposed to just slip right off without a puller. That's how I removed on both on my 928s. Sometimes a little tap with a dead blow hammer can free things up.

Hi,
Mine just wouldn't work with a puller. I finally got frustrated, put my fingers on the outside, my thumbs in the middle and gave a tug. It slipped a few mm's. After about 5 more minutes it came right off without much trouble.
Good Luck

Hi spray some PB blaster onto the crank snout let it sit for a few mins tap the side of the gear a few times spray some more PB then try to pull with your fingers if this wont work then try using some heat on the gear

Give the woodruff key a good look to make sure it's straight in the key slot in the crank. Mine was tilted up slightly at the front. A (very) gentle tap on the front of the key pushed it back in where it was supposed to sit, and the gear then came off painlessly.
BTW, don't waste much time with heat. You can't get it hot enough withut also heating the crank. They expand at about the same rate, and by the time you get it all hot enough, you can't hold on to the gear with your fingers any more.
A little never-seeze on reassembly will help a lot the next time.

I could never get a puller on there, either. What's worked well for me (always an engine I haven't already messed with the gear) is to use the PB Blaster as mentioned, then placing a medium-sized chisel between the gear and the washer. Yes.....a chisel. You have to be very ginger to avoid whacking away and/or damaging the washer/spacer because it has a lip on it. Alternatively, a large flat head screwdriver will work. If you do bugger the spacer, it can be easily replaced. Has worked well for me a half dozen times.
