The funny thing about this is that neither of the covers pictured in this thread look much like the two that I have taken out of my S4s to evaluate. I wonder when they cnanged? And I wonder why the one in Tony's GTS looks so much like what I think is the early version of this cover. I may need to know a lot more about the 928 technical history to determine, for example, when did the extra hole for the little high pressure window washer get put in the cover. And, why does the version of this cover without the extra hole for the washer still have some apperant provision for it?

Do you have any more pictures that might be posted of other versions of this cover? I wonder how may versions there are? I wonder if one version of this cover could be made to satisfy the needs for all the model 928s?

IIRC new covers come with no hole on the passenger side and it must be cut for cars that have the high intensity washer reservoir there. I think that reservoir may have been there since '87, then it was deleted on the GTS from '92 onward.

Standing in front of the 80, the cowel cover went only about 2/3rd's of the way across starting from the left. On the 94, it goes the full width. 77Tony

This thread is going to suck without some more pictures, I think. The covers I have off my S4s go all the way across, but they do not have the trough-like depression that is shown with both of the covers pictures in this thread, including yours, Tony. I kind of now understand about the hole for the high pressure windshield washer, but there is also a difference in the covers pictured and the configuration of the large rectangular vent hole of the heater vent? What is up with that?

Thanks, Tony, I didn't think of looking at all the open hood pictures on eBay to get an idea of all the different configurations of this panel. I look at a lot of them but never actually paid any attention to this cover panel.

Isn't that only half of the cover. The wiper motor is exposed.

The early cars only used half a cover, and the material as much more robust that what the later full length covers were made of.

Guys - on ths one I'd not bother wih a replica - My guess is that you won't find any way to make one that fits well and looks good for <$100.

I think the stock version is fine when installed correctly and is robust enough for the application.

It only seems flimsy when some jerk removes it - then can't figure out how to put it backunder the rear clips properly - then the wipers eat it up...

So.... Its the jerks that need to be reengineered ...!

I have had to take my car to a non-Porsche AC shop twice - both times I just removed the cowl before I went - I think this is the smart move.

<$80 for any genuine Porsche part measuring longer than 24" in any dimension is a steal (plastic or not)

Good point. I just got a new one from Roger and hope to prolong its life. Wondering if I should coat it with the rubberized undercoating now if it adds to its flexibility?

Well, we are getting ready downstairs today to hit it with the FARO scanner.
Will shoot it installed on the car too.

Along with a grill we removed.

Not sure what that will yield, but one thing is for sure, we've got to all help each other get into reverse engineering mode on these if we are going to keep driving them.

The current design from Porsche seems a lot better than the old units. Or it may be new plastic versus old brittle plastic.

Two versions available 928 574 157 00 LHD $73 and 927 574 157 00 RHD $52.

The shorter earlier unit is available in the UK as a local 928 shop had a replica made.
