Which better? Buy spare engine or wrecked car?
In order to have spares around (like a good extra engine so you can run the tar out of the one you have and not fear TBF), would it be better to just buy another engine (spare) and build on it in your spare time as a hobby...than to buy a complete wrecked car? In a way, for a 1985S, the purchase price may not be all that different.
I'm tossing around the idea of buying a good spare engine...but I've NEVER seen a wrecked 928 for sale. What happens to them?
Wrecked cars should have some pretty good engines in them, no?

This is something I've thought about quite a bit, I'd just go for the spare engine tho. It would be fun to have it hanging around to tinker with and build up special just in case something goes wrong with the one in the car. If I had the space for an entire car, I'd try to find one that is as close to the same as what I've got.

My vote would be buy an engine. Scrapping/parting out a car would be a pain in the rear. I created one when Heidi caught on fire! Now I'll have two spare engines for both of my 5sps. Just need to get one of them up here so I can start tearing it down and doing the mods it will need.
I have an immediate need for the interior out of Heidi but once that is done, I will have a shell of a car sitting in my shop taking up space. Space that could be put to better use.

www.oklahomaforeign.com has a couple of wrecked Sharks.
I would tweak the spare engine, install it, and save my original engine for the sake of future resale value.

If the price was right, sure either a parts car or engine would be a great "nice to have". In my situation I can't see having the space or money tied up in an engine waiting for something to break. Now if you were building a stroker and still wanted to drive the car that's another story.

Good points you make...if I get a spare engine, I'd probably get T-boned the next day and have TWO running engines and no car. So a spare extra car where the parts interchange (if I can find a place to park it) sounds attractive.
On the other hand, getting a newer S-4 or GT sounds like a good plan too. My intent is to never ever be without a 928 to drive. My kids can worry about the parts left over in my garage after I die. If I sell what I have and get a newer (single car) then I'd be back to the T-bone issue. Then again, affordable and good shape 928s may always be available in my lifetime so maybe it's a non issue.
Some of you guys have two 928s...one for the road and one for the track..or serious blown play. I think Shane has the right idea.
Thanks for your input, all.

in my singular experiance, if you have a little extra money, and the room, a parts car is a good idea... when I bought my 79 parts car, I bought it for body panels, as my car was in need after a guardrail meeting... I found out after that the car had a mint engine in it, and basically was a love affair for some previous owner... for reasons unknown to me, the most recient PO had bought it for just the rear end and tranny, and some interior bits... basically, he took a great car and ruined its uses as a street driver.
well, long story short, a car that I picked up for 1k has saved me easily 5k in parts, and I havent touched the engine yet.

I was lucky and got a spare donor car for about $120, best investment I ever made. Not only an engine 40K miles but all the other goodies you always wanted from clips to bolts etc, including a nice leather dash.
