Paints and Finishes for 928 Parts
I am getting ready to start restoring and bringing my 928 back to show room condition. Well thats the dream anyhow. In the last two years of driving my shark I have sorted out many mechanical and electrical problems and am getting to the point that I am satisfied with its performance. So the next logical step is to go through part by part and restore everything back to prime condition making the car look as good as it deserves and last that way.
I would think there are many of us out there that want to refinish certain bits and wonder what paint system should they use or what type of finish sould be used, plate, powder coat, polish, spray etc.
I have searched this forum for tips and advice to do things like refinish the door lock surrounds and found a number of ideas how to do it, but I for one would love to be able to find a repository of this type of information laid out in a way that would show what the original factory finish for a part was and what alternative ways exist to try and restore that part to it original look, with maybe links on write ups showing how people have done it.
Do such a thing exist?
If not would anyone else be interested in it?
If so does anyone have any suggestions of how we could do it?
If everyone would contribute it could be a great resource.
Comments please.

It will be hard to find an exact list of factory finishes...but nicole might be of some help in that area.....most people use the jager kit on the door locks-rear window trims....cheap and looks really good! I've seen some engine parts (the throttle cable assembly) replated in a ??? Zinc that looked really good...
I would start at the most neglected cosmetic issues and work in from there.....if the door locks are a big concern...then you have one very nice 928!! Most likely you'll need dash-leather work....Paul Champagne does some incredible work and the guys and Motorsport Utah also have a very good leather guy.... With some work-time and lots of $$$$ you can make almost any 928 look like it just rolled off the showroom floor!! Carpet kits (about $600) are another good starting point

Unfortunately I'm away from my car but if I remember correctly many of the parts are gold and silver zinc plated. If I'm not mistaken zinc plating was banned years ago in many US States and most of Europe. The alternative is either CAD plating or paint systems offered by companies such as Eastwood which offer similar appearance. If you do go for CAD plating I'm sure you can find a local plater which can add your small batch of parts without charging too much. Or do a search for Eastwood products, they have an extensive list of restoration products. I will be going through a similar process after I replace my interior. Goog luck and please post your before and after pics!

Thank to you all who have pm'd me etc. The locks where just an example, yes the stick ons are a great idea but what was the original finish? Powder coat, Anodised, epoxy paint? If like here in the UK you don't have the big 3 or 5 nor do you have Jager then things get a bit harder.

I just bought the over lays from Jager, haven't had a chance to put them in yet but they look to be great quality. I bought the lock detail kit and the console overlays. The kit includes extras for practice, pretty cool!

I like to use SEM paint on exterior trim peices like the door locks and window trim. I just did my door locks the other day. It is a little more labor than the stick on method, but I prefer paint when possible.

I bought my SEM paint here in Carson at a store that specializes in automotive paint and supplies. I think I have seen this stuff at other parts houses. I just sand and spray. ( after masking ) I am sure I should put down primer first, but I never have.
