I just found an old Mobil credit card reciept..no date but premium was 1.12 in Texas... given my long tenure as an attendant in high school....it was probably a few years after the 'ol '83 Euro hit the road, which is consistent with the history I've been able to piece together. Good old Google helped me to track back a couple owners, but I still can't find anything on the person whose name is listed as the party that imported it....( 83 Euro)

I was so happy to find the red key when I took out the driver's seat while doing the first cleanup after buying. Which reminds me, isn't the first vacuum and cleaning job the best? You're cleansing the car of the all the POs, kinda of like revirginization.

*I've found that my red key worked in another 928 gas cap, so there must be fewer pins in the caps.
**Alarm option starts in '80.

My '82 came with 3 red keys, one for the ignition, one for the door and hatch locks, and one for the gas cap, which actually doesn't need a key at all. At some point, I would really like to just have one key, and a small, thin one at that.

Hmmm...my newest 40K mile '80 (#0654) came with a red and a black key. It does not have alarm. The red key ONLY works in the ignition whereas the short black key w/light works everything else including the gas cap. (Interestingly, the red key works a random spare gas cap I had.)

Is is possible the ignition lock was changed or is this a non-alarm 'feature'?

Same here. All my cars over the years I had good locks and black key worked the gas caps. At least from ‘86-‘93.

My car came with a red key that only fit the replacement driver's side door lock, and had a simple, symmetrical key profile.
I rekeyed that lock to match the rest of the locks, but that's the story of my red key.

My car came with big black key that does everything: alarm, glove box, hatch, gas cap.

I also have these:

The red key that came with my 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca remapped the computer and turned an already potent car into a real monster! Try it in the ignition and see what happens
