Default Will too much coolant trip the "coolant level" sensor ?

Since i put the car back together i have had the dash flash a message warning of "coolant level" Because it kept telling me this i was topping it off before running it, and topping off as in filling to the very top. The manual states that a cold engine should be filled to the manufacturing seam which is about half of the coolant tank volume. Would too much coolant be the cause of this warning. I know that when cold it needs room to expand, thus if the level sensor detects it to be too high it will flash the warning, but i had assumed that the excess would just go out the overfill port, but i guess the rad cap would probably cover that up.

anyone have the same issue, I am going to remove water to the half way "seam" and try my luck tomorrow.

it only detects when the coolant level is too llw, not too high. maybe you have a sensor problem.

If you overfill, it will self-level. Sounds like your sending unit could be bad. Unfortunately, It's a real pain to get to. Good luck.

Sounds like the float that's in the water coolant tank is stuck down. (it just slides up and down)

Major PIA to remove the tank because of the access to one of the bolts. In my experience - I used a homemade "tool" to reach in and move the slider up and down. It actually worked pretty well and freed the gummed up float.

I'd give that a shot before trying to remove the tank. If you ever have to remove the tank... you'll know why.

thats funny, I had tried to remove the tank with the engine out and gave up and just left it in.

those two bolts are a PITA, I took them out but still couldnt get the tank out, and i spend 30 minutes getting one of those stupid bolts threaded back in.

I will check with the float.

i was just looking at it and i will try to break the level sensor loose. I would think its stuck as well but i dont know how i am going to get to the think via the coolant cap opening. I will try to make some 90 deg thing and put it in and see if i can move the float.

I'm hoping i wont have to remove the level sensor as i tried to do that before and it was a real pain.

I'd be curious on a description of the homemade ool described in the earlier post.

There is a chance your "reed switch" (the switch that is turned on when the magnet in the float moves down over it) is bad or sticking. The sensor body comes apart and you can put a new switch in. My Radio Shack has them but my Radio Shack carries some no-radio shack items.
See mine taken apart here:

Yes it is a pain to get the container out, but it can be done!

When i removed your tank andrew there were only 2 bolts. Somebody decided the 3rd was to much of a PITA to put back in

Use a continuity tester to check the collant level sender on the tank
