Default Odometer-worth fixing ?

When my shark went to 70,00 miles the 2 came down indicating 270,000 miles- then the other day the odometer failed to register.

Suggestions and wisdom ?

Thanks in advance-

Mike

Most likely the little gear has failed like so many do. I put anew one in mine, worked for a few months. Took the pod out and checked it out, cleaned everything, put it back in.. worked for a few more months an quit again... I need to take the pod out again for other stuff, so I'll look at it again... One of those little frustrating things.

The problem is that it isn't so little, its a small problem that can hurt resale significantly.

Only replace it if you plan on selling it, or if you are keeping the car and that bothers you.

I did the fix w/out switching the gear, just rotated it, since it only turns every 100K I figure I will deal w/it again when I turn 200K miles. Have not had a problem for 10K miles since repair.

Very true, although for me I don't think i have plans to ever sell my shark, but one never really knows that. It does bother me.. I think this time I might send it out to have it completly overhauled, fix it right and not worry about it again.

Well, FWIW, I replaced my odometer gear 8 months ago and have been driving trouble-free ever since then. In fact, I was the only one in our group from Columbus, OH for SITM that had a working odometer. So you definitely are the only one, or will be the last. (Oh, and I also replaced it myself. Felt like I was taking apart a nuclear bomb or something with all the small gears, just be careful not to mess anything up.)

This is where the digital odo is desirable, or can they fail as well? at least not mechanically....I would hate to have an extra 100000 added in one click. Good service records should verify the true mileage with a prospective buyer, but who wants to sell their 928 anyway?????

HI if you replace the gear try adding some silicone spray on the tip of a pin to the shaft that the gears run on somtime they seem to get stuck and then you have different numbers tuning on the ODO shaft

Whitefox, I disagree. Why would lower miles hurt re-sale. It can only help, as long as you repair the odo before selling. But that wouldn't be honest.

As far as replacing the gear. Its very easy to do. The entire removal, repair, and re-installation should take about 2 - 3 hours. I have a new gear for a Euro for sale. $15.00 + shipping. Its white Delrin so it shouldn't ever break. I also have an extra US gear but I think I'm gonna hold on to it in case I need it down the road.

BTW. The symptoms described here ( the #2 falling) doesn't sound like the common gear failure. You should take it apart and be sure.

My project car shows 780 000km but the odo gear is intact. Same thing must have happened to it too.
