Default exhaust exhaust exhaust

i need to replace my exhaust from the "X" pipe back.

Will this thing be obnoxious if I eliminate the rear muffler and just run a cat?

in the mean time i am loomking for a stock looking rear muffler.

I eliminated the rear muffler on my 88. Have cats and resonators only. Love the sound, not as noisy as my 69 911 was with stock exhaust if you are just cruizing, but a nice aggresive tone if you get on it.

Have the cats and the resonators with a RMB on my '88. Sounds awesome.

You can sure tell it is a V-8 and it doesn't sound like every Mustang on the road.

You need the Borla cat back system.
I saw some on eBay recently.
That is what is fitted on my 82.
The ANSA looks awefull whereas the Borla looks stock and sound great.

I must be in the minority here... I have a Borla cat-back system (the P.O. had it installed) on my '89 S4 and I really hate the way it sounds. To me, it is much too "civilized" in tone. I hear many 928's with just a RMB installed and to me they sound much more aggressive.

Just my $9.28 worth though...

Guys, you're confusing the 1979 owner.

What do you define as obnoxious? If your definition of obnoxious is pretty conservative, try to find an 85-86 US or a dual Euro S stock cat back system. H-P has a 79 with just cat(s) and no mufflers. Most people would probably consider it obnoxious, but I think that would be great for an aggressive sound. My car with a cat and Ansa system, sounded wimpy. My car with a Magnaflow and no cat is obnoxious.

I had an ANSA muffler on my 82. it didnt fit that well and also didnt look that good and it sounded like older v8 Impala. I want a little more kick than that. I want people to "hear" a Porsche. but i also want them to beable to hear whats going on in their car when theya re parked beside me. I do not want it to sound like straight pipes, or a harley.... I took it to the local custom shop today. I was really let down. i expected more ideas from him. I suggested new cats, small glass packs behind those, then out the rear with a resonator tip and no rear muffler at all.. he said it wont fit????? this guy is supposed to be good.. but so far has not impressed me. he was recommended by a few people today and he sure did have some nice stuff he was working on. maybe he just didnt like me..... I have that problem.....

I have a RMB, resonators, and 928 Specialists X-over. The sound is pretty loud compared to stock. IFor a while I thought about going back to the stock muffler, but have gotten used to the sound now. If you're stuck in heavy traffic, the idle rumble can become tiresome. But once the traffic breaks, BBBBBWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!

A 32 valve sounds different than a 16 valve engine when both are configured with a fairly open exhaust. I don't think that the US 85 86 or the S4 examples are very good proxies for 1979 sound possibilities. While it is still informative and there are plenty of examples of exhaust enhancements on the newer cars, you should pay closer attention to what the 16 valve folks have to say.

If you want it to sound like a racey Porsche, forget about the glasspacks or Flowmasters. Go with a straight through muffler like Borla or Magnaflow. Don't forget that cats are good mufflers. You could have a straight pipe system welded up and see how it sounds. Just make sure the guy who does it leaves straight sections in good places to mount mufflers in case you want it quieter. I think the stock resonator areas by the tranny are the best places for mufflers.

see tv's thread about his 16v euro. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...3&page=1&pp=10
he says it sounds awesome, dual 2.5 with moroso mufflers. I am planning a single 3" on mine, with moroso mufflers.

I'd be wary of someone who looked like Al Capone.

Exactly what I have - a magnaflow X-muffler and it is just a touch too loud for me. It sets off car alarms when I am idling around town. I am starting to work on it tonight using mandrel bends and 2 resonators - one on each side after the muffler. I am also looking to see if I can run the two pipes straight back appearing just outside and under the bumpers at the rear.
