Rule of comparitive neglect. If the normal wear items weren't looked after, what about the stuff that doesn't show? Oil changes, trans fluid, lube, etc. Keep shopping, or make him pay you to take the car, and it's associated problems.

If you are going to go for it, I would make sure you get a good feel for the problems. If ones in good condition are worth around $5000. Think about what it will cost to rehab this one

- Brain $600
- MAF -$400
- Shocks - $800
- Muffler - $300
- Timing belt $1000

These are wld numbers, but you can see that at a purchase price of $2000 you are already over the $5k price for one in good condition. Just a thought.

On the other hand, it's great that are you willing to bring it back to life, since it seems like we loose one of these cars every week.

1986 928S Market Update from Excellence Mag Dec 2005

Low $8,015
High $12,200

Disregard any thing "seller"/PO (previous owner) says and have PPI(pre-purchase inspection) done at a mechanic that Rennlisters in your area suggest. Reduce repair estimates + what you would like to do to the car from price you think is fair, and you may find a good deal, or you may find the seller needs to pay you to take the car off his hands.

I just purchased my third shark via ebay. It turned out to be not quite as nice as I had hoped but much nicer than I had a right to expect with no PPI. Take a look at the Rennlist classifieds. I know there are several members that have cars for sale. I know that Brendon has a nice (85 Euro?) that he has already done most of the needed repairs. But there are several others. When I was building and selling computers, I would tell clients to determine what you want to spend and buy the best quality you can for that same money. If you poke around on the list, you will get a feel for quality. The list of things for my 79 went something like Timing belt/water pump, vacuum lines (most old cars will need them replaced if they have not been), Intake gaskets, rear half shaft boots, remove and clean the fuse panel etc... Depending on what year you buy, the list will change somewhat. Now, I will tell you that I bought a nice low-milage car and am replacing things before they break.
Take your time and buy the best one you can find. You will spend more time in the drivers seat and enjoy it more

Hey Odie - I've been contemplating selling my shark. I've owned it for the past 10 years. Price is in the neighborhood of 7.5K. Let me know if you are interested. I can give you a list of things I've done in 10 years. I'd like to see it go to a fellow rennlister.

That 86 does not sound like its worth anywhere near $5K.....it sounds like a horrible money pit to me....otherwise known as a "project car" Keep looking for a nicer example! Jim's is a better value for a well maintained & running 928!

It was just plain rough. Well, maybe that's not accurate. The car needs lots of stuff that is going to add up. I'd say it's a $1000 project. Not $5000 they are asking.

Typical buyer who saw a porsche for cheap and bought it on an impulse not knowing anything about these cars...

They decided it's too much work or just don't know where to start...

It apparantly ran fine when they bought it and thought it would be easy, I mean cheap, to fix.

It would make a good track car. Engine runs rough, needs wires as is misfires bad.

I'll give you the laundry list from memory...

rear shocks totally blown

no timing or any service records

needs spark plug wires (badly cracked)

left axle move in & out (side to side)..right side does not move

needs windshield

front spoiler gone

left fender has exterior holes/slots just in front of front tires...two are really torn out 1-2 inches. did the spolier attach here? This is the big problem cosmetically
PS pulley bent, probably shaft too, I guess someone ran over a curb on the left and ripped the spoiler off and messed the PS pump up.

ghetto wiring-part of harness under pass side is all pulled out, over size battery was installed and shorted out when the battery door was closed on it. ghetto ground strap. Pass window motor/fuse blows

sunroof moor runs but rood does not move (adjustment?)

Original paint but fadding (can be buffed and look decent but not great)

Does not appear crashed, just bumped and such. front bumper is slightly off and/or hood is slightly misaligned. reat of body is fine, wheels looked shinny and not dented/scuffed.

carpet needs deep cleaning. interior is not too bad (deep cleaning, new floor mats & dash cap)

dash cracked ( normal)

seat are fine but small tear in the normal spot for all cars (left drivers side bolster)

some small rips/splits in the rear leather panels and center console.

AC & blower fan does not blow at all, nothing not even hot air.

dash inop, probably same wiring harness thing.

door lock cylinder sticks out (break in attempt?, sheet metal not damaged)

Some stuff is striclyt labor/time to correct (buff paint and clean interior). Some is normal maint items that any used 928 would need anyway (wires, dash cap, timing belt, shocks), some is repair/restoration stuff from neglect (wiring harness, AC, PS pump, spoiler, window/sunroof, dash inop, door lock, etc)

They are just wanting to get out of a car that they are over their head in. I suspect they paid way too much and then discovered what all the car needs and are just hoping to get most of their money back out.

They claim the car sat for a couple years while a title issue was getting resolved, so they did not spend any money on the car and baerly drove it during that time. I guess while waiting for the title stuff to get fixed (clear title now) they started to look the car over more closely and discovered how much everything was adding up too. They claim the car looked ok and ran fine when they bought it and later discovered the battery problem and wiring harness fiasco when he pulled back the passenger carpet.

I spent about an hour going over the car but already knew in 2 minutes that $5000 is probaly 5x it's worth. I just didn't have the heart to tell them they got screwed when they bought it to their faces and say the car was basically junk and would take $5000 of work to be worth $5000. The girl was saying she sees this year car on auto trader for $15-18K. I just said thats what they ask but did they sell? Told them to check eBay for real market values as you can see what the market will really pay.

I guess they would be best off to replace the plug wires and just drive it as is until the timing belt blows they will at least get maybe another year so some "enjoyment" out of owning a porsche and impressing the neighbors. or just park it with a for sale sign and hope some teenager grabs it for a few bucks 'cause it's a porsche. No Porshce person is going to touch it for $5000. But you never know what someone will buy....

Look on San Antonio craigs list for the car.
