Default Top 10 to do's for newbies (like me)

Hi there everybody, Ive been reading your forum for the last month, its great that you guys want to share your experience, Ive just bought a 84 s euro and dont know where to start, the car was neglected for the last 5 years and apart from the TB / waterpump, grounding the electrics and buying the manual Id like get a top 10 sort of mechanical priorty list so i dont start throwing my money away on a paint job, a set of furry dice's and go faster stripes.

Thanks in advance
Turlough

replace thermostat and seals;
engine and this includes leaks; tbelt SYSTEM; coils/wires/plugs/distrib;
verify radiator good and no leaks in any fluid systems anywhere - includes rad hoses replace + trans;
verify all electrics/temp sensors and such work and all relays are good as well as fuel pump + right-rated fuses (IMPORTANT!!!!);
Get rid of rain leaks (maybe pri-1 because it will kill a lot of stuff);
tyres/suspension/brakes/steeringrack check and recon;
vacuum leaks check everywhere;
look for gotchas like circlips at light mechanism; failed lamps; plugged rain gutters; alignment issues; seat switches; window switches; sunroof scraping; window winder looseness; steering wheel grind; wheel bearing play; shocks state; door handle mechanism; hatch pop mechanism/motor; rear wiper; battery not old/worn-out; alternator charging; a/c working (riiiight) etc.

Darn (Edited) H,

You put that list together faster than I could think about what I have already done Looks like youve BTDT.

So, don't forget to read the FAQ. Do searches and you will find write-ups to do alot of this stuff and by all means, join Rennlist. It will pay for itself many times over.

Rule #2
Don't leave a choclade ballen or pudding brodje next to the intake tubes during start-up.

#3 Don't cry to much when that 1.6 Euro/liter gasoline only gets you about 9 km down the brick cobblestone roads.

Just kidding, too! Congratulations on the new project. Don't get your picture taken too often by the roadside cameras.

Replace all the sensors! I have wasted too much time trying to track down problems that were caused by bad sensors

Assuming you have an auto, don't forget one thing that will kill your car dead - Thrust Bearing Failure. You need to check Flex Plate Preload.

As you have an interference engine, don't ignore the cam belt service, that will also kill it (as I found out). Don't assume it was done properly, don't assume the worn sprokets were replaced, and don't assume someone hasn't ground out the belt tension warning system.

1st thing to do it read through rennlist like a madman.....

2nd would be to review the well known 928 websites....928intl, 928gt, devek

Then check other members websites

Take this one a step further and be proactive on the rubber fuel lines immediately. It's the best return/insurance you can get for your investment.

On my '84 the lines were original; your's probably are, too. All it takes is a touch of stress for them to crack or crumble. They may not be leaking now but I wouldn't wait for that to happen.

This is bad -

And here's Shane's experience - https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/208761-object-lesson-fuel-system-hoses.html

And just to scare you again -

Well, on second look it seems the above might be a interior fuse/relay panel fire. Check that, too.

Probably one of the most useful additions I've made to the car was installing a switch on the neg battery cable so that I don't have to use that wing nut any more. Saves a lot of time and skinned knuckles (and sparks).
