CDR220 & IPOD installed
Pics of the CDR220 installed and the IPOD in the center console of the GT. Once the original CD-2 was declared unrepairable, I thought the CDR220 was the best choice to keep the 'original' look. I'm happy with it so far, still in process of replacing the rear speakers. Much better sound than from the CD-2. The IPOD hook up is the way to go.

I have the CDR-220 set up with my IPod. I use the Dension Icelink and the sound is terrific.

The radio Porsche uses is actually a Becker. I have a Becker Traffic Pro 4720 in my Euro GTS. Works terrific and is very easy to use. Harmann Kadon sells it in the US http://www.harmankardon.com/ . It works that well that all my cars have the same Becker 4720.

Can you control the iPod from the CDR220 or do you need to raise the armrest?
I mounted a Pioneer DEH-6700P in my '85 along with an iPod controller bus. You can control/power the iPod from the head unit with this system, but it is kind of frustrating to use. You can only surf by genre, which means that if you want to find a particular song or artist then you have to spend a bit of time tapping the head unit to find it. I'm getting around this problem by making a genre for each artist in my iTunes. Overall, a pain in the ***. If anyone knows a better way to do this please let me know!

DSC928 - you need to get some nice material under your ipod so it doesn't get too scratched up... felt, sticky rubber, cork whatever... sticky rubberized sheet is my plan.
I added the apple remote so I have a convenient way to control the thing with the cassette box closed. Unfortunately my head unit has no aux (except the CD changer) so I added a switch/relay to switch the audio between ipod (illuminated) and CD Changer. As far as the head unit is concerned its just talking to the CD changer the whole time.
As you can see not quite installed yet.
BTW My iPod is a relic - a series 1 - but it still works well - has great baterry life and I like the classic original look. You'd be surprised how many folks with newer iPods want to see it & play with it - the original style always were relatively rare - before 'phenomenon status' (and getting rarer still...)
BTW the other big thing is the control panel for my Motorola Bluetooth wireless phone interface.
Obviously with this I no longer have a power outlet/cigar lighter - I will relocate it & implenting that is one reason why it isn't installed yet.
Of course as always this is implemented on a backup ashtray - the stock one has gone to the 'original eqiuipment box' along with a growing number of others things...

Alan,.... I planned to line the box with material just as you suggested. The iPod remote is an intriguing idea, I like your setup.

I use my CDR 220 to control my Ipod. The Icelick Plus goes a bit farther and shows your top 5 playlists.

I believe the porsche deck can control the Phatbox from Phatnoise. There are hacks for installing large format disks, and the VW versions can be found for around $100 on ebay, you just need to make the custom cable. Icelink is also a very nice product. I just recently switched over to digitaly stored media with an old empeg markII unit. I have about 150 or so CD's stored in losless FLAC format, and have installed a digital output card that is going to a custom built processor i am still working on. Not having to cary CD's in the car is great. One less worry.

But, when I have a few more bucks lying around I will uprade to the IceLink Plus.
The real benefit to the IceLink is the inline amplifier. A direct connect to my head unit was a great disapointment.

I have the adapter cable with RCA plugs at ends that came from SW Stereo.

The Icelink plugs into the bottom connector on the Ipod. The other end goes to the CDR 220. The RCA connector approach is less than optimal.

The 220 is a great setup. And it looks great...fit's well...and is Porsche. I have the 210 and regret not going with the iPod compatible 220.
