Well, I got the tensioner locknut loose, filled the tensioner with 30 weight, tightened the tensioner two rotations, rotated the crank twice, and rechecked. Still a bit loose, though in range. Tightened some more, rotated again, and rechecked. Now it's good. Buttoned it up, crossed my fingers and fired her up. Let it idle for 3 minutes to see if the TB warning came on (it didn't), so putted around the neighborhood at 1500 rpm for 10 minutes to get up to temp (I removed the radiator to flush it out- any tricks on bleeding the cooling system? I'm coming from E34 BMW's.....), no TB warning light. So she's asleep in the garage, I will order everything tomorrow. The right front tire is corded, so I can't safely drive anyway. Rears are new, fronts are shot. New Avons are on the way. Which leads to.......:
Anyone know of a good 4-wheel alignment/Hunter DSP-400 shop in OC, CA? Greg Brown would be my leading choice right now (since his is the only shop I know), but perhaps there are others?
Larry- Thanks for the compliment! If you noticed anything else on the car that needed attention while you were looking, I'm all ears! See you at VCR (post TB/WP, I promise....)

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR OR RUN THE ENGINE UNTIL YOU HAVE CHANGED YOU CAM GEARS. It is imperative you change those since the black lining is already gone and they are pretty much eating at the belt as it runs. I changed my gears when i was changing the belt 20k miles ago, and to be honest, i was scared when i ran my fingers on the side as i could feel how sharp they were. Just a friendly advice to put the car in the garage until you change those parts and yes new belt too as your belt has been weakened.
Sincerely,

Rob, Did you feel the edges of your cam gear teeth. If they are sharp you really should park it. If they have a radius on them you should be ok for awhile but it is important not to overtighten the belt.
Congrats to you and your new family member

Thanks!
I didn't feel any sharp edges but I'm not going to take any chances. I've got a grant due July 1, so it's officially parked. While the rest of the car is immaculate, these pics are indicative of the general look to the engine compartment. I spent about 8 hours on the car yesterday, just to adjust the TB tension- most of that was cleaning things. (BTW, an ultrasonic cleaner sith simple green does wonders on the dipstick and oil cap....). But hey, part of the reason for purchasing was to have something to work on, and it looks like I've got plenty of that to do!

Rob, when I was there, I was thinking that this guy (Martin) should be shot for neglecting this fine piece of geman engineering. I was amazed that he had the gall to show the car as dirty and filthy that it was. Looks to me like it could not have found a better owner. See you at VCR on June 25th. I'm sure that it will look like a different car

Yea, you know, I took another look at the first pics and then the last pics you posted. This thing is way over due. You didn't mention how long ago the belt was done or if the WP was replaced. I suspect not if the tensioner was not rebuilt. Also, I am going to bet that the idler pulley and bushings are near toast. Take a look at the top side of the belt...it may just be the camera/lighting, but it looks like glazing...you can see the ribs pretty clearly too on the back side. Lot's of grease and oil equals heat retension and the dang list goes on of things I can point out and take a pretty good guess at.
This car looks like the minimal was done to keep it on the road. Take the time to do it correctly as it looks as though you will. No engine should be that dirty and greasy. That is just more signs of problems and more problem to come as a result.
Good luck!

I would replace the gears and do a full TB job before driving it at all.....it sounds like its driving fine now....but its not worth a few miles to blow up the whole engine....just wait and do it right!! Take your time, get some socal guys to help you.....learn alot about your car, make new friends and have fun in the process!! Just provide beer and BBQ and they will show up!! I would, but norcal is a bit too far!

I would wait on the TB change it is was my car (275k miles). But if my car was a GT (sounds like yours is in pristine condition) I would not risk any chance and I would change the TB ASAP.

Aw come on, Larry, you just have to look past the dust! She cleaned up pretty well after a bath. The engine compartment, however, is another story.....

Hi while your hunting parts for the timing belt and water pump i would recommend that you do not get a new porsche waterpump they have a tendency to fail shortly after installation as they seemed to have used bad bearings and seals, get a rebuilt pump it will last a whole lot longer, and the real thing to fix are the 4 fuel lines they should all be refitted with hi pressure fuelinjection line, any hose shop can recrimp the lines you have and then you can use your old ends

That's a very good point- yesterday I noticed that the front hose between the fuel rails is showing 1 cm long splits in the outside near the fittings. So I assume the others are toast as well. I'll add it to the list.

My friend Chris was interested in that car, but we found another...a 25k mile red/black '90 GT that is local out here. We saw the car yesterday and I was blown away by the condition, and spotless as well. More money than your car. He's going to buy it; his brother has a mint '85 euro 5 speed with 29k miles. Two lucky devils. Good 928s are not easy to find, not everybody is an enthusiast.
Thanks again Larry, you'd love the one we found out here!!!!!
