Default 89 Auto box into 84 Auto

Anyone know if this is an easy swap? - The ratios are not exactly the same but that isn't a big issue. Are the ancilliary connections (kickdown cable, vacuum line, oil cooler etc.) the same ? And perhaps crucially is the Drive Shaft (inside the TT) the same? I wouldn't ask the last question but the relevant part of the WSM is with the subject car across the sea at the moment.

Cheers

Jon

Edited as the donor car just got 2 years younger

Jon;

Going from poor memory here...

The only thing I remember is the kickdown cable. And even that may be afro-aussie engineered.

Thanks Scott

We have since discovered that the bell housing with the TC in it is about 20mm larger diameter. This can be cured with a FBH.

We also discovered that the donor box is an '89!

Next question - Inspecting the wiring the '89 box has additional wiring for the ATF fluid temp sensor (only
connects to digidash cars so can be ignored) and wiring to what is referred
to in the WSM as transmission protection switch (WSM page 37-158). Anyone
know what this does ? It looks like some form of pressure release valve? On
pre '87 models there is no electrical connection to this part just a
threaded plug but both pre and post '87 appear to have the hydraulic
pressure relief valve inside the box.

pics of the transmission protection switch are at

What you may not like is the 89 ALWAYS starts out in second gear...
