Magnaflow / Carsound does provide a significant amount of cats to OEM's and performance companies. I used to work with them and I know their design and manufacturing process reduced prices and improved flow. They were growing like mad when I was working with them two or three years ago.
Just out of curiosity Dave do you know what the HP difference is between the 300 CPI and 100 CPI cats?

Afshin, the 300cpi cats lost approx. 7 to 8 horsepower on my X-over system, the 100cpi cats were less than two. They are down to a level that even a minor temp change of a couple of degrees would affect horsepower more than adding the 100cpi cats.
H, all I'm worried about is being legal. I want as much horsepower as possible, not trying to be as clean as possible. If I can do so legally, while passing emissions tests...all the better. If I wanted to be as clean as possible, I'd quit driving at all and watch my fiber intake so I wouldn't 'personally' pollute the enviornment. There are set levels in emissions testing that have been placed for good reasons after much study. (Riiiight!) I am trying to produce as much horsepower as possible while staying under these levels of emissions. My oldest son is getting into zero emission vehicles, it all evens out in the end...lol
Robbie, we do have an adapter for 16 valve cars with 85-86' exhaust manifolds, it is $139.95. The Y is $379.95 for aluminized and $539.95 for stainless steel. The cat is an additional $179.95 for either 100cpi or 300cpi, your choice.

On the legal part, its a bit up in the air (resources board that is) but maybe Calif is going to be happy with OBDII cats enough to allow them without a lot of fuss on older cars. The cat guys I have talked to say they are much cleaner than old cats, and there would be no reason to have an air pump.

Dave,
I'm interested in having my street car maintain the "quiet" sound of stock. It's a GTS with the large resonators and the OE rear muffler. Will the 100 cats increase the sound significantly????
If they do, I'll go for the 300's when I order. If they don't, I'll take the 100's.
Happy New Year to all.

Robbie, it comes with a straight pipe that can be installed in about 15 minutes in place of the cat.
Brian, no there is no attachment for an air pump. The new cats do not require an oxygen injection system to light off so it can be removed, or plumbed to open air. I could build an adapter to use the O2 sensor location on the passenger's side for air injection if you wanted to locate the O2 sensor to the driver's side.
As far as I know, oxygen injection was used to get the older style cats to light off earlier and really had nothing to do with the quality of emission control other than to make the cats reach their efficient heat range earlier.
Yes, the adapter is a stand alone piece and we can make them in stainless if need be.
Using one new style 3" long, 4" diameter 300cpi metal matrix puck per side is equal to the factory 3 stage ceramic cats per side as far as cleanliness. The hot ticket with 100cpi cats is to double the length over the 300cpi. You have less flow loss and will pass current emission standards with flying colors and many tuners are using them with OBD2 vehicles with no problems. We have fit them to 996's, 993's and even old 911's with the monster cat on the driver's side of the engine with great success.

Gary, I have an 87' running around locally with the large resonators and the rear muffler still installed. He is running an X with no cats and is almost as quiet as stock. The rear muffler does an amazing job of quieting the exhaust. With even 100cpi cats it is going to still be very quiet.

Thanks for your stewardship of this thread today.
The longer 100 cpi cats referenced in #27, do they fit OK on the 'X' and are they more costly?
And the price for the stainless adapter?
Thanks.

The longer 100cpi cats are for different applications. For the X, a single 3" long, 4" diameter per side is more than sufficient. I can still get 300cpi cats for the X but found no need for them. I could custom modify a setup to run 6" long cats per side but see no reason to do so.
A stainless adapter would be $159.95.
