My '94 was pinging. I changed the ignition wires and added a can of SeaFoam. Does not seem to be pinging anymore.

Charley - my issues were solved by a combination of reconditoned MAF and reflowed injectors - both make sense... can have other benefits - but prob a $1000 combo.

Thanks Alan. I'm not familiar with the term 'reflowed injectors'. Would they retain the same poundage? Once warm, I get pre-ignition in all gears under load.

Charley, did you ever change the plugs to copper single electrode?

I don't recall which plug i have in the GTS. I'll check after SATL. Do you recommend the Bosch plugs?

GTS do seem "on the edge" as far as detonation is concerned. Any oil vapour in the intake or cylinder will just make matters worse.

An aged MAF will tend to give tip in detonation becasue it will not provide the instantaneous mixture enrichment necessary to prevent detonation.

I know Greg Brown has been SharkTuning the EZK on a GTS which has a very severe detonation issue.

The GT EZK EPROM will help in less severe cases.

I'm about ready to jump back on this horse. Or, at least continue trying to solve my GTS' pinging problem.

I have one of John's MAS, newly rebuilt, that I'm going to put in the car.
I have yet to check the plugs.

One other thing to consider. perhaps:
Carbon buildup.

Hi fellas,
Got in on this thread late, but have some input to share.......
When I first got my 93 it had some pinging, and I went crazy trying to fix it, and though it's mostly gone now, I can still induce some pinging......
One thing I found was that the in-tank pump was bad, and it cured the problem 90%, but even after new knock sensors, hall sender, rebuilt injectors, re-timed cams, new oxygen sensor, plugs, wires, caps, rotors...... Motorvac service, adjustable fuel pressure regulator turned up, etc, etc, and it still is not completely gone. (I have not swapped MAF's but that could be one more thing to try....)
It runs cool, I run Mobil 1 15w 50, Bosch Platinum 4's, and I religiously use 93 octane, but it's an issue I have not been able to conquer completely..... I've never heard the first ping from either the S4 or GT.....
I've seen down past the valves in all three engines, and the GTS has a tad more carbon build-up....
Of course, since GTS's burn more oil, they're definitely more prone to carbon build up and detonation issues...... I run Techron regularly and try to keep it blown out.... It doesn't have any faults stored.....
Would love to put this to bed too....
Best,

I count myself as lucky. The only ping I have ever heard with 93 GTS (94 engine) was with off-brand gasoline.

Mine still pings or so my wife tells me as I can't hear it.
I have new pumps to install - already has new MAF.
I will let you know once the new pumps are in.

Yes, just use the Bosch copper. It is the cheapest thing to change of all the recommendations. You may even find some better performance from them!
