I've fixed the pinging / pinking by switching the EPROM in my EZK to a GT one (slightly less agressive map at high revs / load with 2 degree less advance according to John Speake). I don't pretend to understand the whys and wherefores but if some GTS's are prone to pink despite full 6 degree protective retard from knock sensors (the default even if knock and Hall sensors are faulty) - and the EZK tests OK (don't necessarily trust the Hammer on this one) - then swapping to a slightly less agressive map makes sense.
And it has worked for me. No pinking at all now, despite still having suspect Hall and knock sensors which I am looking in to. And performance seems identical (depsite 2 degree difference at peak = ? 5 - 10 bhp).
Total cost from John Speake - around £60 for the EZK diagnositic and fitting the new GT EPROM. Great price and great service.
I am a happy man!
Hope this helps

Mark

Hi Nick,
That was the commonly held view in the past.

Since then I have the means to investigate and measure direct from the maps, and it turns out the GTS is slightly more advanced in places.

Interesting tid-bit there. So, the GTS has more advance in a few places and a higher static compression ratio.

Great stuff. And starting to shine a light on these issues.

John the best you can get here is 93 RON+MOn/2

The problem is in the US that you never know what you get. I like Europe better RON and that's it.

BTW my GTS pings on 93 and 89 and only if it is fully warmed up and it is at least 28 Celsius outside...

OK...I am trying to get at something here for all of us. Maybe you other guys can share your info too???

Pinging can be directly related to heat. Forget about timing as we should all be timed properly. As foolish as this may sound, I think it will tell us a bit if we all just enter our info.

For any of you who have had strange pinging.... how about something to clean carbon deposits up? I tried SeaFoam on one of my E30s and it still runs fine... not sure if it helped, but I'm pretty sure it didn't hurt. Another one of my E30s has a slight ping from 3500 to 4000. I have yet to give it the SeaFoam treatment, but I will very soon... hopefully that'll fix it. The car has been running without a thermostat for a while, so I suspect lots of junk in the combustion chamber.

Mixture = 50/50
Plugs = NGK Iridium (1-2 ranges colder)
Temp = around the first white line. Never goes past 1/2.

Remember that if you notice pings there are very likely pings that are not heard. Have any of you guys been running any of the knock detection boxes that is available?

I have heard that the knocklink works well, planning on installing one in my car.

It would appear that the 928 knock system only starts retarding the igntion if the number of knocks exceeds the 50 in 10,000 firing cycles (i.e. 2,500 crank cycles in a 928).

The igntion reatrds in steps, and when the knock stops it slowly recovers...

Some days my car pings - usually when warmed up and at lower rpm. Then again, sometimes it pings throughout the rpm range, and sometimes never at all.
