It would certainly be nice to see some interest and value rise in the 928, but I really do think it is a dream. There has been too many articles and it has been made public knowledge for years that the 928 can be gotten at bargain basement prices, but parts still remain high as well as high maintenance costs. Don't be surprised when these issues resurface when this very subject of comparison comes up in the secondary press market. Why would a completely different car spark interest in an old model based on different principles and technology? Thats like saying when the mini van's came out, the price and interest of those 70's van's were popular again.

There will be no "craze" over the Panamera as the price will be quite high and unobtainable by many. This ain't gonna be no entry level Boxster or Cayanne.

I hope you guys are correct, but I just don't see it happening. ;(

So many people have absolutely no clue as to what a 928 is let alone how good it is. Even most car guys are clueless about it. A new front engined rear drive Porsche super car will bring comparisons and it will bring awareness to a whole new group. My first thought would be about 110-125K for the panamera base model, but it may be cheaper if they intend to sell 20 K units/year.

If that is the case, then the entry model may be 90K. A couple years later and used ones will be 60K. And there goes the GTS market. But seeing panamera's on the road as often as you see Cayenne's will spark a lot of interest in Porsche GT's. That will bring interest to the older 928's just as the new hemis from daimler/chrysler got average people even saying hemi.

Just compare that film of the S4 doing 170+ comfortably on that bridge to the newest 997 TT with top speed of 198. 20 years later and the 928 still looks damn good and that is what a lot of other people will come to realize.

Why would the Panamera spark interest in the 928? In my view because its presence continues to break the Porsche mould for rear engine sports cars.

Will Porsche ever connect the cars by reference? Not on your life! There's just been too much bad water under the bridge about 928s. One of the first questions I get from friends and stargers alike about mine is "how can you afford the repairs?". People are quite surprised to find out how much work I can do myself with the support of our online parts providers and this forum. I don't hesitate to add that this forum has effectively demystified 928 ownership.

This forum is the best thing 928s have going for them. As more owners such as us maintain the debug the older cars, the cars will inevitably maintain or even increase in value as they stack up very well head to head with other similarly priced used sports cars of all gendre.

The worst thing we do for the future price is to keep referencing current listed vehicles to past "deals" we have all seen or exploited. I know we all want that '95 GTS 5 speed in the garage for a price of $20,000 but lets put the value of our cars in context. I cannot afford a new Cayman or Panamera in the near future but I get continuous thumbs up from srtangers and local PCA members alike. The "value" of my 928 is much higher than price I could sell it for.

Not withstanding that I couldn't get my money out of my 928 right now, I wouldn't trade it. Its too much part of me now and I have no anxiety about maintenance, reliability, performance, etc.

That was today's rant. Now off to the golf course to celebrate mother's day.

The Panamera has nothing to do with a 928 except the badge on the hood. It will be going up against - and hopefully stomping - the likes of the BMW M5, Audi S6/S8, and AMG tuned S-class Mercedes.

But I've said it before and I'll say it again - there's no way they can sell 20,000 Panameras a year at a price in excess of $100,000. They'd better introduce it as the 'Panamera S' so they can add an entry level version later. Sound familiar?

Comparisons have already been made between the Panamera and the 928 and the car is not even being produced yet. The automotive press will probably continue to make comparisons in the future simply because it is Porsche's second attempt at a front engined, water cooled V-8 supercar. Some will call it a sedan but it will have GT in its blood, despite the number of doors. If they produce a coupe and/or a turbo version then the comparisons will really begin ("successor to the 928", "what a modern 928 with a turbo would have been", etc)

Bottom line: Porsche should not fear any comparisons of the Panamera to the 928. The 928 was a success in many, many ways. A comparison to the 928 gives people who grew up with the 928 as teens a baseline by which to judge the new V8 GT - and those are probably the people that will be buying these cars. I would love to see them revive the 928 name on the coupe version, if ever produced. Other models have died and been revived with success (Datsun Z cars, RX-7 line, Pontiac GTO, Dodge Charger, etc.). Porsche's biggest fears right now should be rising gas prices (sound familiar 928 fans?). How about bringing back the 944 in hybrid form?

Where is it written that if a company stops producing a model it must be considered a failure? Only in Porsche land, I guess. Ferrarri knows the deal - keep introducing new products/models and nothing gets stale or associated with a bad image.

The real questions is: Will Porsche (or anyone else for that matter) label the Panamera as the "flagship?" If so, look out!

As to 928 values (the real reason for the thread) - any discussion of 928s by the general public, press or Porsche will help our market, especially if mentioned in an article about a $125k-$150k Porsche V8 supercar.

The Merc CLS500 4 door coupe weighs in at 4,000 lbs , the Cayenne tips the scales at about 4,800 lbs the 4 door Panamera with all wheel drive and larger than the 997 (911) will be easily two tons of fun ! Now that will be a touring car...
