need help bypassing aftermarket alarm
Hi all
I've decided to eliminate my Clifford alarm in the "79 US but can't seem to find any help with my searches.
This particular model is old...like 1985 manufact. date and completely useless to me as I don't even have the remote for it ( Model # 60-003 III ) and hoping this is the cause of a "no spark" problem. Car ran before - * should say started by poring gas down the intake*
Now I can't seem to disarm it
Looking forward with much appreciation towards any help I can get on this (kinda big letdown after removing and cleaning tank / new pumps / filter etc.)
Regards Ben

After market alarms are simply spliced into the original wiring. They found a wire or two which they liked and cut them and made the current have to flow trough the alarm control unit. The splices are usually obvious since the alarm system wires are different colors than the factory harness colors. There was no single method to wire aftermarket alarms so they cut power to the ignition or fuel computer or fuel pump which ever seemed to be the easiest for that particular installer that particular day.

As Jim says look for the additional wiring from the alarm. Usually there is a seperate relay for the ignition disable - so if you see relays find the terminals 30/87/87a and figure out where they go - you may have multiple relays (horn/locks*/hatch* etc) in which case trace them all. In the end you want to remove all the wiring that is not original so strip it back one by one. Once you figure out where the relays go it will probably be obvious. Possible options are as Jim says look for disabling the fuel pump, ECU, starter etc... let us know what you find wired to what and we can advise further.
*maybe not on a 79 but you get the idea...

I find the easiest way to do this is to find the alarm module and then follow the wires going from it. That way there is no question about which wires are to be removed.

Thanks for all the sound advice guys - I'm in deep on this one.
OK ... heres what it looks like so far........
Clifford brain
1. multiplug with @ 12 wires which I assume to be mainly switch points.
When I pulled this plug and reinserted - the horn does the intermittent
beeps till I turn the key on/off
2. terminal strip uses #5 and #8
#5 goes to OE yellow
#8 goes to grey
First relay
87 goes to homemade diode pack - then splits into OE green (? coil ?) / OE
white with black writing
87a not used
85 to similar diode pack ( reversed rel. to 87 ) then to OE yellow
86 and 30 are jumpered and join 4 OE reds
The second relay - I'm not even sure is part of the alarm but its in a socket
with flat mounting base though not attatched to anything just kinda loose behind the panel. Too dark to see in there now....but lotsa wires here -
many stripped. Factory ??
I hope the above info makes sense to someone and welcome all replys

Pull the carpet covered console side on pass side - 1 screw by the seat one more forward & low & a couple up top by the glove box - feel around - once this is off you will be able to see much more - its not difficult. I always recommend this - even makes easing the head unit back in easy.
A floating relay sounds like after-market. You really need to trace those wires - either back to the Central Electric Panel (which is where the disable should be wired to - or at least to the loom (bundle) they connect to - tell us what other colored wires are routed together on the factory side.
Colors on the alarm side are pretty irrelevant - no particular convention is used..
On the Porsche side here is a rough guide:
Red = battery+, Red+white stripe = battery+ switched, Black = ignition
Do your lights flash when the horn sounds (if so which ones)?
One relay is for horn (and lights?) and probably one is the ignition disable.
If you have lights flashing and horn as alarm thats the one with the diodes...
If yes - then the other one must be Ignition disable so trace those wires back...
Not sure what you mean by terminal strip - connected to what - the alarm...?

The terminal strip I refer to is a numbered (1 to 8 ) external screw connection area on the clifford brain
Only terminals 5 and 8 have wires going to them - the rest have none
