I filled up last night in San Jose at $3.29 per gallon. The lady behind the counter screamed that it cost her $93 to fill her Lincoln Navigator the night before. This is beginning to be irritating. I drive less and less, and had to think about it before going on the fun run last weekend in the Bay Area. I remember the days of 25 cent a gallon gas.(Guess that shows my age. ) A few years ago, (1996) I recall my trip to the Oklahoma Parade and paying $1.25 per gallon and hating that.

Well, it may hurt, but my bet is it is hurting the freaking SUV crowd even more.
(See above) Maybe they'll disappear soon, so we can return to the open left lanes on I-5 down to LA. Freaking monster SUVs block up everything and the sooner they go away the better. That's my rant for the day. Back to work to make some gas money so I don't need to take the bus.

As for short commutes: planning departments in the Bay Area are already bending over backwards to allow relaxation of zoning constraints for higher density projects close to mass transit; at least they are in this area. I lived for 10 years in the city without a car. And European and Japanese (Tokyo) cities are even better. We will evolve. It is inevitable. Otherwise we need to become richer and push the peasants out of the way. Or maybe the world could be convinced to stop having sex.... and we could maintain our present standard of living. I doubt that will happen. Nah, the answer is to get richer and richer and pay the price. Heinrich, are you listening? (I know he will agree with me if no one else will.)

Saw 3.75 the other day. Whenever we moan about prices someone from overseas invariably weighs in on how easy we have it. The fact is gas has ALWAYS been more expensive in places like the U.K. or Norway and so the kinds of cars that get sold there and what people budget for and buy is already in line with that reality. Six years ago it cost me $22.00 bucks to fill up my 928 tank in New Jersey. That's how much premium was. Within a few months I moved to LA and there was maybe a 20 cent difference. Within two years I had to get used to paying $2.00 and within the last year...well you all know the rest.

Now I realize what I am driving but for someone who went out and bought a 2000 Honda Civic at the same time? Well they were probably not banking on paying $3.00+ bucks for regular. That is 3 times what I paid for premium a few years ago. Americans are not the best planners or savers but even for those who put some effort into their budget both present and future, this is a tough pill to swallow.

This whole thing reeks. Most state counties can't mobilize a mass transit system inside of 3 years but in the same span of time we're expected to believe that the sudden demand of countries like China and India are affecting us? Please. And if one is so worried about destabilizing countries we need oil out of maybe one ought to think those war plans through a little better. (stepping down off of soap box)

14.5 gallons @ $3.39 per in upstate NY. $47.84.
Not going to run her much lower with that lying cheating gas gauge.

Used to remember $1.39 for premium and sub $1 for regular.

Cost more. But not going to ruin the Smiles/gallon quotient in the shark.

Ernest (NYC) Wonder what will happen when gas hits $4 - $5.

My shark is parked more than enough!! :>) Thats why I drive a 3 cylinder everyday!! 30mpg in town is nice..but a 3 mile commute is better!!

I almost didn't attend the fun drive last week due to its 400 miles..hmm

$25 total spent on lunch & parking
19mpg average = 21 gallons @3.39 (3.45 in San Jose) = $71.19

Total fun drive expensive on plastic = $96.19
Fun had with other 928ers & 1 968er = Priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fuel gauge in our 84S is deceiving. The descent from full to 50% full is slow. I had 180 miles on her and was at half of a tank. I filled the tank up this morning and paid $32.50 for just over 10 gallons. I'm guessing I didn't have half a tank left and that the descent from 50% to E would have been quicker.

Is anyone working on a banana peel and beer-fed flux capacitor for their 928? If so let me know. I have some beer.

Yup, I noticed the same thing. I was showing just above 1/4 tank left and only put in 12 on the fill up.........So that left me with 10 gallons? Upon filling it full, my guage shows that I have 3/4. This should be interesting. How many miles are the majority of you getting out of a tank?

I get about 400 miles on roadtrips with a gallon and half or so remaining on refuel and maybe 280 or so with city driving.

My guage also only fills to an indicated 3/4+, and takes more time to fall from there than from 1/2. After 1/2, I could become distracted by the rate of descent. I get around 240 to 250 miles for road driving, but then I always fill up at 3/4 empty 'cause I have a thing about exhausting my fuel supply at an "inopportune" time. I also have a spasm in my right ankle or foot or someplace on that leg that keeps pressing the pedal down farther and farther. Once I got 24 mpg on a trip to LA from San Jose. But I had to drug myself into tranquility beforehand. Don't know how I managed that, but I remember I made myself stay under 100 mph the entire way!! Wonders may never cease. I need a larger tank. And an empty left lane.

I paid a touch over $57 today to put about 17 gallons of premium today - I think it was $3.29/gal in Fairfax if I recall. Simply outrageous. I am very fortunate - I work from home and my commuting is done via air travel - 70K miles this year so far. So my mileage is either personal in nature, or 100% reimbursed by work. I am definitely one of the lucky ones - otherwise it would be difficult to manage 3 thirsty V8's and 1 sipping 4 cylinder

<RANT> I am a dyed in the wool capitalist, but if anyone thinks that the current gas prices aren't the product of market manipulation then you are being naive. Yes, the cost of oil has skyrocketed, but if you are paying attention to the oil company profits, their profits have increased significantly more than the price of their product - across all of the companies. That, my friends, is the product of collusion and manipulation of the markets. Gas is not an optional product - we all have to have it - not only for getting to work, but it is the essential engine of commerce - everything in this country depends on it. Just because the oil companies don't "talk" to each other about raising prices, the "wink and nod" method has been very effective at making sure that price increases are relatively the same for all levels of the production cycle.

Like I said, I'm a capitalist, but we need some measure of government involvement in this energy source. Water, electricity, natural gas - they are all public resources that have both corporation and government involvement to try to insure that consumers aren't totally taken for a ride. Not always perfect, but it helps keep some corporate excesses in check. Oil and gasoline is just as much of a public resource, but there is nothing that keeps oil companies from raising the price all they want - as long as they do it together, but don't talk about it, the only thing that keeps them from continuing to squeeze us is the evenutal howling from consumers to Congress and bad press. Thats what happened, and guess what? Prices plateaued recently at the pump. It's complete and utter BS, and with oil companies hands deep in the pockets of the Adminstration and Congress, I don't expect any changes. I'd love to see a real political effort to investigate the pricing model of these oil companies - I am absolutely all for them making money, but if ExxonMobil is making $.35 profit for every dollar in revenue, then yes, I think that is too much money when I am the one paying for it. And for those who say that it hasn't always been this way for big oil - even in the lean years these companies were still making plenty of money </RANT>

Whew - glad I got that off my chest!

You can always tell a great year in the oil buisness here in Texas. The lake houses get bigger, the boats get larger and the parties get longer. Why didn't I buy 10 years ago...............
