Rope drive shaft
from http://members.aol.com/redbat01/web/page7.html
"With rope drive! Yes, the Tempest used a flexible, curved driveshaft that gently
arched beneath the interior to lower the drivetrain tunnel. In principle, the
driveshaft worked like a big, thick speedometer cable. And to make the drivetrain
tunnel even less intrusive, Pontiac stuck the transmission in the back of the car, in
unit with the differential. So, like the Corvair, the Tempest had a transaxle in the
rear. "

Tempest was a key player in the movie, My Cousin Vinney. The independent rear suspension allowed the real perps car to lay rubber up and over a curb so it was not the boys car which had a solid rear axle. The last 63 tempest with transaxle was available with a 326 V-8 precursor to the GTO ...but it was a swing axle.

About the only thing I generally consider to have been "copied" from the 928 was the 80s penchant for pop-up headlights-- none done as well as the 928, of course. The lights on my dad's 1983 Pontiac Firebird were constantly stuck open, although one little trick (a broken switch, lol) allowed him to close one and leave the other open so he could "wink" with it.

Good to hear! I remember one girlfriend of mine had never told her dad about me (he's the silent but deadly type). I was just a "friend" she met at school. We brokeup and dated different people but became best friends through a series of events. I had actually spoken to her dad a few times and he seemed to be "ok" once you got to know him. Later on, she finally decided to tell her dad for the first time that she was dating and sexually active. His first comment was "What? A boyfriend? He has a motorcyle? Why don't you date that guy Mike instead?", then she said "Oh yeah... about that.... we dated 2 years ago", then he replied "What?! When are you and Mike getting back together?"
My currently girlfriend's dad is AWESOME. I was slightly worried the first time I met him, but he is the most awesome dad EVER. After I crashed my car, he bought me a little model 928. He knows we "hit it" and totally encourages it (says its good for her). He even cooks me breakfast in the morning when I stay over night. What more could I ask for?
