Camping in a famous mountain range may also be an affordable/fun alternative.

Borys, I'm glad to hear that you still have a chance of making it.

Airflight,

You definately want to go. It a great time. My wife and I normally make a week out of it. As to gas mileage, I drive from Indianapolis, and the year before last i switched to royal puprle synthetic, and was able to make it there on one tank of gas, averaging 75mph.

Borys .... so what do you do IF you are 500 miles from home and the car stops running ? On a Sunday morning. Odds are no one near where it stops will be able to help so option 1 rent a good sized uhaul truck and trailer for a one way trip requires a good credit card with lots of room. 2 rent a car and drive home leaving the 928 planning to return some other day hoping the 928 will be safe. 3 get it towed to the next big town rent a room and hope you can get parts and get it fixed on Tuesday if the shop that you take it to can figure out what it needs and you order it overnight on Monday but no guarantee they can figure it out or fix it. I guess my point is if it is a stretch to cover the normal expenses the downside of having a major problem would seem to be potentially devastating. More than one 928 has been abandoned along the road. Taking risks helps make life exciting but sometimes it gets a little too exciting. I take the old very brown 1980 out and track it fully understanding that I could blow the engine or potentially crash it both alternatives I can live with since I am only 100 miles from home, have another car or two and have access to a trailer if needed plus know where there are lots of spare parts. While it is probable that your car would make the trip just fine what will you do if it does not ? If you really want to be there rent a little econobox with unlimited miles and drive that ,at least you get to see all the other cars and people besides YOU know what your car looks like so no need for it to be there !

Jim, stop scaring the poor guy. Jeez! It's called SITM, not Retal Car Gathering in Some Far Off Location. How 'bout you guys call your event RentalCartoberfest!

JB - The voice of reason. I have had to flatbed mine 3 times in 3 years or ownership. Once was out of caution, another was a simple plug wire, but the 3rd time was visiting a relative when it was perfect and the crank sensor died which resulted in an engine pull.

All no real big problem because of free 150 mile range AAA towing but when you are 700 miles away, nothing but a hassle unless you know someone real hospitable. Those trips are really for new cars under warranty.

A cartoon of a sitm participant would be one eye piqued for any engine anomalies and the other for the ever present donut guards.

Gee, with all the people having back problems, maybe I should set up shop for the weekend at the hotel.
Will work for beer, food, car parts and beer.

Oh, and don't forget bail money if you want to travel with Kempf and I.

A big major 928 event consisting of DR's GT, his Euro, and 100+ Geo rental cars? Even if it did end up like that, I bet it would still be a great time!

There were several Sharktoberfest attendees not driving a 928 for one reason or another while not ideal they did get to have a good time and meet all the other people see all the cars on display. I agree if everyone showed up in rental cars that would be a rather odd 928 get together Basically I try to figure the upside and downside to most situations and figure out if I can live with the downside. Going with the upside the positive is easy since that is what we WANT to do.

...so there'd be maybe 10 functioning cars at the end of the weekend.

Wonder what the fun drives will be like at Econoboxes In The Mountain.
Wonder how the Chevy V6 sounds in the NC mountain tunnels.

The thing with 928 gatherings, if the gathered sharkheads can't fix your 928,
your 928 cannot be fixed. Especially with DR's parts store right there.
Plus Thor will deliver the parts for free. Wooof

Jim, did you get that out of my SITM biography? I can recall at least 3 times when I had to deal with all of the options you're listing - not fun
