Inside the glove box

There is a 'ledge' about an inch wide on either side. It looks as if it might have supported a shelf though there isn't room for that. Anyone know what it's for?

I have seen a little shelf slid in there where people put maps etc... The owners manual will fit below.

I made a shelf out of aluminum, painted it black.
