Hey now, most of the people I know who hold in the clutch pedal are your age, so I figured it was a senior thing

I'm a agressive driver and keep it in gear with the clutch held down, someone comes flying up to rear end me, car jack me or whatever all I have to do is release the clutch, no shifting into gear.

I shift to neutral so there's no wear on the car or on me. I don't even want to know what my personal thrust bearing costs to replace...

I had to change the TO bearing on my low mileage 85 after it gave up the ghost. A call to the po confirm he kept the pedal down in first at red lights. I tend to slide into neutral and release the clutch pedal when I know a complete stop is imminent.

Now here's a question. Had anyone that has multiple 928s ever forgotten which one they were driving thought they were driving an auto when they came to a light and stalled the car? How about started the car in gear without stepping on the clutch?
Maybe I'm the only one but I doubt it.

I always wonder what happens when the rubber flexible clutch hose decides to burst and the clutch engages

Dave I am a manual guy, so I often step on the clutch in my autos.

I'm like H. I learned to drive in a 5-speed and have never owned a slushbox. When I drive other people's auto cars I tend to go for the clutch and clip the extra long brake pedal. It sure does scare the hell out of passengers when that happens. In an auto car, I have to drive with my left knee bent and foot just in front of the seat.

I drive the same way - use my left knee as an arm rest.

Once I hit the e-brake on my Caddy by mistake, that was fun.

When I learned to drive a clutch (early Mesozoic) I was told to put the car in neutral and let out the clutch for all the reasons given above, but also because a hot clutch and pressure plate are less likely to warp while cooling if engaged. So that's what I do if I'm going to be stopped more than a few secs when driving a clutch.

Coast to a stop with car in gear till about 900'ish revs.
Then stop with box in neutral and clutch disengaged.

And I use my squeally brakes to stop the car. Ages ago before I knew better I had the
local shop replace the rear brakes. They used the extra squeally brake pad shim.
Thought about fixing it but I like it now.
Lets me know if the rear brakes are engaging and is a nice audible reminder to those
around me that I'm getting on the S4 brakes. (Had rear caliper seize up on my ex-Audi)

Ernest (NYC) Extra strong left leg.

Jim, I have blown the rubber flexable clutch hose on my 78' twice, it did not stay in gear but thats a pretty persistent fire that starts when the fluid bursts onto the exhaust system.

Learned something here, because I am a chronic engine braker. So it's better to simply brake to the stop than down-shifting?

Elsewhere, a little MT shifting anecdote...

My boss is the proud owner of a 2002 BMW Z3. When I acquired the 928, I offered to take him out for a spin. It's in his nature to be kind of chesty about his sports car and he quickly began making comparisons between the Porsche and his Z3. His car has an automatic transmission, but he has the option of controlling it in kind of a pseudo-manual mode. Kind of cool. After about ten minutes of listening to him burn incense at the altar of his BMW, I asked him to see if the Owner's Manual for the 928 was in the glove box. He removed it and I asked him to verify a spec for me...

"On page 49, what does it say the maximum speed is for this car when downshifting from 5th to 4th gear?"

He flipped to the page and read the number. (Do you know what it is?)

The rest of the ride to and from lunch we talked about work.

Hehehehe....
