The BWAAAA is back
Well, thanks so much to the rennlist group- I've gotten through a timing belt change, MAF troubles, electrical glitches... and though am still working on getting a windshield thanks to Rennlist it's possible. Thanks to everyone (especially Kary4th for the TB tools). And update for anyone who may have had similar issues to me.
I had this issue posted earlier:https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/262937-losing-cylinders-under-load.html
I pulled the MAF off- the wire was COATED with nasty black stuff and lots of junk. I couldn't even really see what was supposed to be there anymore. I blasted it with brake cleaner- it cleaned off really nicely w/ no residue. The plug wires for it (plug attached to car, right before the wires entered the plug) had the coating worn off and might have been shorting against each other. I used 'liquid electrical tape' and coated those again. Not sure which did it... but it runs beautifully now!
It was so sweet to hear that sound again. Thanks to all!

Were we starting another K&N hack?
Simon,
Did you back track source of oil contamination residue on hot wire?
A good read would be the '88 Won't Start" post, the reply on page two -use the link - by John Speake might be helpful indeed.
Some cause and effect stuff...
The reference to the K&N was more data mining .
The heavy oils used on the filtration substrate to help trap particulates can and probably will -particularly, under heavy pedal, heavy air intake consumption- can be sucked in along with the rushing air. A fine mist will probably coat the heated sensor wire, after some time the burn off cycle of the wire will not get rid of the residue and Viola!. Bad readings, then bad fuel correction then either total failure or bogging caused by full-rich loop due to faulty signal.
Have yet to see any ill effects on the early models - look Ma, no wire - as long as the filter is NOT over oiled, and seated properly.
Keepslugging away.
