Default Beginning research, plan to buy

I've been following this forum for several months, this is my first post. I bought an 87 Carrera in December and have caught the bug. My next purchase will be a 928, but probably not until late this year or early next - I have to set aside some funds. I'm planning on spending around 10K, and was hoping to get an 86.5 or newer with reasonable miles and a good service history. Is my thinking rational? I've been monitoring Pelican, but their 928 board is not as active. This seems to be the place to go for advice.

I'd appreciate any hints, helps and advice you can give me to assist in my search process.

Thanks!

That is very rational thinking! Seems you have done your homework. Most of the '86s that I have seen worth buying have sold between $8500 to $12,000.

For now take what ever you can afford to save and start a PPI fund till you find the right car. This way you don't use up the money saved for the purchase to get potential 928s inspected.

Great idea on the PPI fund - I had one done on the Carrera, and will be sure to do the same with any potential 928 - forgot about paying for it, though!

sprio - location perameters are key as well...how far you'll travel to get it, are you willing to ship it, etc. If you are willing to venture outside your immediate area, many times other location Rennlister's will help "take a look" at a prospective local vehicle, to let you know if it is worth your travel time to inspect it in person.

Bottom line is once you have a strategy for purchasing, with price/location/condition/options/color (many have later regretted settling with color) it'll be easier to focus your efforts on finding the right Shark. Look at and drive as many as you can, even the one's that "need a little TLC" [love those listings that end up having a hatch full of 'all the parts are there'] so you can get a feel for your preferences, repair tolerances AND your focus 928 market. It'll better prepare you to scoop up your perfect specimen as soon as it comes available.

anonymousagain, thanks for the thoughts - I live just outside Chattanooga, and am willing to travel several hours to check out a potential car. I bought my 911 in Charlotte, NC, about 6 hours away.

I haven't seen many 928's around town, but suspect Atlanta has a few. Obviously, if I broaden my search, I'll have mor choices, and appreciate in advance offers of help from Rennlisters. I have no DIY experience with autos, so condition is paramount.

I've never dealt with shippers - are they reliable? Expensive?

I've bought and shipped my last two cars with no problems. I have a couple of good references if you need when that time comes. About $900 will get a car shipped to you in TN., in an enclosed trailer from anywhere east of the Mississippi. But DON'T rely on just pictures. If you find a nice one, get a PPI done and you MUST go see it for yourself. I avoided a near disaster recently with Ebay car that I went and inspected before the bidding was up.

Good luck, and I'll be glad to check out any central Florida cars for you.

Default What a small world....

Welcome Sprio,
I used to live on Signal, I live in Ooltewah now. I just bought a 928 three weeks ago off of Lookout.

I have several friends with 911's on Signal now, so I'm sure we probably know some of the same folks...

Look forward to seeing your shark purchase... feel free to PM if you're going to look at one, I might like to go with and help with the PPI...

If you do a search in all forums for carriers you will most likely narrow it to 3: BT Transport, Horselesscarriage and the most expensive one that bill itself as the official PCNA (?) carrier. They were $300 more. I was very happy yesterday when my GTS was delivered by BT. They subcontract so the guy on the phone is merely an agent, in this case to Diamond Express Transport. If that bothers you, you may want to deal with Horselesscarriage, but the woman I spoke to on the phone was very rushed and I didn't get the feeling I wanted to deal with her if there was any problem. BT was always available on the cell, and delivered on time, professional in every way. YMMV. Good luck.

Thanks, Bus. I think we may have connected earlier on the 911 board, or perhaps Pelican. I've just moved to Signal from Maine within the last several months, and am meeting people through PCA, which I joined in December. If you go to meetings (usually 3rd Tuesday of each month), I'd love to talk to you about your search process and see your shark. I wish I had the money in the bank now, rather than having to wait the 7 or 8 months it will take to accumulate my budget!

Default Just realized....

... realized I communicated with you on the Pelican Parts board. Boy, my memory is short.

If you want to talk 928's and find some of the things I've learned over the last three weeks of engine removal/reinstall details and challenges... let me know. Best way is through email: m no space fetter at comcast dot net

There are any number of strategys.
If it's an Ebay purchase make sure you have an understanding Boss, significant other, and a bag packed. Don't forget the Bank note/e-loan paper work.
If the sHARk pans out you are there before the 48hr down payment deadline.
If it's abused you just walk.
I always downloaded the E-bay auction page in question so when you get there and find the
pictures were 7 years old, and the paint rubs off in your hand you can silence the whining/lying SOB
and demand a ride back to the airport or you'll be the one to sue!
Working on these puppies is a learning experience ... but from the BTDT side of the house I'd take the old timers advice.
Look for a well-documented, low-miler in good shape inside/out, top to bottom and STILL do the PPI!
The cost may or may not be higher than you want to go but you are ready to go driving instead of the garage, and Big Three to plunder their parts bins.

What body style are you particular to? The S4 and newer look? Or the OB (ol bugger) look? I prefer OB's but my car is going to have the best of both worlds. I have already added the Fuba (roof mounted whip) antenna and an S4 spoiler. Next I want Aero mirrors. G'Luck!!!
