I love them both. I own an 89 928 S4 and have driven 944 Turbo's. I will definitely buy a 951 soon in the future. The biggest difference for me is that the 951 is a much,much harsher ride.....that is what you have to pay to get extreme handling, very nimble, awesome car, and to the ignorant who don't know Porsche it is viewed as the lesser car. On the other hand the 928 is alot more comfortable, however it still rides relatively rough compared to Good Old US of A cars. Buy both I don't think you will regret it.

I had both an '88 944TS and '80 928 Euro S for quite a few years. Depending on my mood, and needs I would choose which car to drive. My 928S acted as my luxury muscle car, and my 944TS as my sports and commuter car.

Of course the 928 being red and loud was also more of a ticket magnet.

One point not made yet. Who's doing the wrenching>? I assume both are manuals. One clutch job on the 951 will convince you that the 928 is a dream. I've heard other than that the 951 is easier and generally cheaper to work on, but you have to drop the tanny to do the clutch. Got to test drive. YMMV.

You gotta drop a TON of stuff..."Book" on the 951 Clutch is something crazy like 30 hours!!!!!!! (But - they tend to last forever. I recently had to do the clutch on my 951...it was ONLY ~90k old!)

Here's a cut/paste of my response to s similar thread a few months ago...
(here's the thread -> https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/218723-comparison-needed-951-vs-928-a.html)

<<944T (951) vs. 928 on track really depends on the mods and track layout....BUT - in 'stock' or close to it form - lots of long sweepers and straights favor the 928...if it's really a short/tight course that doesn't allow for letting the shark spreading her wings...then the Turbo gets the nod.
928 & 951 are also very different animals....In another recent post I described it as: "If the 928 is an elegant HIGH CLASS "lady of the evening"...the 951 is a rough riding redneck girl on spanish fly! "

If you have more then "just one" - you will find yourself driving different cars on different days and for different reasons. My daughter asked me just yesterday, which one I like more, 'Baby' (the shark) or "Farrah" (951). I responded to her - that, of the vehicles, Baby was my first real carlove....but, I liked them both - and it would be sort of be like her asking me which I loved more - her, or her brother.>>

csb - don't know where you are at, but here's a nice (and priced to sell!) '85 located in Jacksonville, FL. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...75#post2946775

I know the owner and the car. It is a BARGAIN at $7k!

But you're forgetting the 968...3 liter 4cyl that cooks at high revs...has great looks..is newer than most 928s and 944 types...and much easier to work on/maintain than the 951/928...and more aftermarket track items than the 928. At rev in the twisties..it's awesome. Gives the 951 a run for its money. Retrofit THAT with a turbo and you have the ultimate performance machine! It's a shame that Porsche only make a handful of turbos in the 968 config. Then..it's a shame they dropped the 928 too..but I see the Panamera, etc. fixing that.

Clutch book time is 24 hours with an 86 with the 1 peice crossover. Down to 18 or 20 with 2 peice. Less if you know the shortcuts.

if they are similarly priced, i'd definitely go with the Turbo S as they generally sell for more than an 86 928. also, if you want better performance, the turbo S is definitely the way to go. i've had 87 turbo (non s) and currently 84 euro 928. if you like to do burnouts, the 928 is much better at it. if you want top end, the turbo rules.

I have to disagree, the top end on a 32v is where it really begins to shine.

I can say one thing is true for most of us. Either one of these cars can do more than we as drivers can get them to do. Performance-wise these cars are fantastic for the price we are now buying them for. So it comes down to not performance but individual taste. What do you like more? I love the looks of the 928. The styling of it is something that does not ever grow old in my eyes. Every single time I park a 928, I cannot walk away without turning for one more look. The 944/951 is a fine looking car from the front and sides, but what kills it for me is the rear and hatch. Too much bumper and way too much glass for the rear hatch. The 924 that I owned was the same way, just too much glass back there.

So as you can see I made the same choice three times for the 928, all three '86's. They are great performers!
