Paul, I'm glad to read that you took it slow. The 'ring experts told me that it takes over 100 laps (at 14 miles/21 km per lap) to become familiar with the ring. I can believe that, I've done about 21 laps and only when I had Ed, my ring "pilot," with me (who knew the ring like the back of his hand) did I feel the least bit secure driving at any speed. Ed took several of us out for hot laps in his Cosworth Cleo (long gone by now), and still to this day it was the most fun I've ever had on a track. There just is no place here in the US (or elsewhere that I know of) that equals what is thrown at you.
At Euro 928 2003, we had one poor chap who spun his 928 and took out the side and the rear hatch window blew out, he had to have it trucked back to Switzerland. A Dutch guy managed a 360 degree spin and was very lucky not to come into contact with anything - and this was done while following a lead car to help ensure that nobody got into trouble! Actually that weekend, there were many "he-men" in their BMWs and after the weekend there were several fewer BMWs.
The ring will bite those who think too highly of their skills and occasionally bite those with considerable skills. If you are an enthusiast driver, it is one of the things that you should do at least once while you're still breathing. But seek help from the experts.
I ask just one favour. Next time, please wash your 928 before taking pictures

Here are a few pics illustrating the comments made earlier, including a pic of Joe from the UK after he patched up the front of his car.
