Good project race car?

Good project race car?
Hey,
I found a real cheap 928 for sale by my house today. It's a 1982 with auto tranny. I was thinking of picking it up to either strip it down and build a race car, or just part it out and sell the motor.
The good:
-it runs pretty good, sounds great
-engine looks clean
-body is decent but has some rust spots
-tranny shifts ok
-wheels (design 90?) look good
The bad:
-interior is shot, I mean totally gone
-could use a respray
-electronic accessories need to be fixed/replaced/removed
-lots of hoses and the air intake tubes need to be replaced
-and worst of all, motor started smoking after a few minutes of idling, from under the airbox. Smelled like oil burning off.
He wanted $2000 but reduced it to $1800 because it started smoking. I could probably get him down some more. He got it from a friend and has no idea about 928s and realised that he did not have the time to fix it. Actually he also didn't even realize it had a V8!
Could I strip it out out and make it a race car? Or could the engine and other goods be sold for more than the purchase price?
Thanks, Josh

The 3-speed auto wouldn't make it a great racer. A 5-speed conversion is expensive unless you have all the parts from another complete car being parted out. Converting to a 4-speed might make it a decent beginner racer and isn't very hard to do. An 82 US is 4.5L L-jet, not big on HP but still fairly light and very simple. A 82 Euro/ROW is mostl likely 4.7L 300hp, but the choices of class to race in are a little more limited (no SuperCup if I read the rules correctly).
I think $1800 is very high for what you describe. Where in MD is the car? There are a few of us around MD who could look over the car for you to give you a better idea of what you might be getting into with it. If you do get the car and part it out, I'd be interested in the wheels if they are D90s or similar.

Thanks,
The car is in southern Charles county. I think that I should probably pass on the car. From what I am reading early US models don't really have alot of power. I think that it was a 1982 and it had a three spoke steering wheel, but a S4 spoiler. Are there any ways of telling if it is a S or Euro model without the VIN?
I think that a mid-eighties car with manual would be a smarter buy. On Ebay early engines in great condition are going for $1400, making parting it out seem not worth it either.

82 Euros will have side markes behind the front wheels, should have a fog light to the left of the license plate recess, H4 headlamps with an adjuster *** next to the driver's seat, and K-jet injection (individual metal tube fuel lines to each mechanical injector instead of fuel rails like your 951).

I agree with Matt - the car is worth maybe $750 on a good day.
