Default Temporary fix needed. PS hose leak.

My HP hose has sprung a pinhole leak near where the hose passes the suspension tower. I need the car for a club event next weekend but can't get a new hose by then. I'm considering taking it to a hydraulics workshop and asking them to cut the hose at that point and fit a connector. Anybody BTDT or have other words of wisdom?

TIA. Colin. 89GT

If it sprung a leak in one place that brings the integrity of the rest of the hose into wuestion. See if they'll completely rebuild the hose.

don't forget...
high pressure ATF + hot exhaust manifold = well done shark

Sounds familiar...!

I bought a new hose, had it shipped to my house overnight. You could do that, or take the old one to a hydraulic hose shop and ask them to make you one.

If that sprays on the exhaust manifold, say good bye to it, that oil burns well! At least on the LHD models the hose is not so hard to get out in one piece. Mine (RHD) was rebuilt in 3 pieces, much easier to refit. At least get some sort of outer covering hose or heat relecting wrapping, slit down the length, cover the leaking part and tie the cover on tightly. Then the leak will just dribble down inside, and not spray on the manifold.

Thanks for the warning. Fortunately I read the article on this subject so have already taken precautions.

That's exactly the spot where mine burst. Right now I can't find a hose for my RHD car even ex Germany. I'm still looking but need a quick-fix for next weekend. Maybe the hydraulics workshop can simply replace the entire flexible hose part leaving the pipework in place. I'll ask but I suspect the swage fittings will be different to what they normally use. Tks.

I spotted your post on this subject when I did a search. I was hoping you'd chime in. Already have a piece of beanz tin secured around the leak point with two very tight jubilee clips. It's a big improvement but still weeps slightly. You have screw connections between the hose and pipework I think. Correct? Did you re-use the restrictor section with it's rubber 'bumper' washer. I've been told that leaving that out would produce a lot of noise in the car.

Colin, I doubt anything can be done in place - the smallest crimpers we have can barely be lifted by one person, and have jaws about 15" in diameter. My rebuild was done by brazing threaded pieces on the ends of each of the steel tube parts, and nut fittings on the ends of the hose parts so that next time the hose parts can just be unscrewed and replaced without disturbing the steel pipes. Yes they refitted the restrictor in the long hose run over the inner guard. That section is there to soak up any pulsing coming out of the pump, sort of plenum effect.
