My wipers work fine on low, med, high, but on delay...nothing, not one wipe. I have finally replaced the stock relay with the VW relay and it is still not working. The VW relay should take the potentiometer out of the equation, right? Does this mean there is a problem with my switch gear (turn signal, wiper). Everything else works on this part. Any ideas? Any way to check it?

Well one way would be to remove the relay from the socket - and probe the relay pin marked I (look at the can pin diagram) - measure voltage to ground with the ignition in either accessory or ignition position. Should be 0v with the wiper stalk in the off position and ~12.8v with the stalk in the intermittent position. This is the intermittent input to the wiper relay.

The relay does 2 other things - see if they work:

1) Does the parking switching - with the relay out the normal wipers modes should stop wherever they are when you turn them off - but park correctly with the relay back in... (NB the park position switch is on the wiper motor - but the heavy duty contacts to switch to motor are on the relay)

2) When you pull the stalk for washer mode the relay should cause a 2-3 second auto-wipe.

If 1 & 2 work then the relay is getting power, if not suspect the relay wiring...

If there is no switching on I then the switch or wiring are suspect - next stop the column stalk switch output terminal 53i (connects to Relay I).

Sorry for the hijack, but I suspect that there is a problem with my contacts that tell the motor to stop in the park position. Are the contacts actually in the motor? I wanted to try to clean them up. I looked at my relay, and seems to be working ok.

Yes the park contacts are in the motor but they then feed trhough the relay to keep the motor energized until it gets to the park position. (motor is under the plastic cowl near the hood hinge area on drivers side).

I have no idea why they designed it like this - it seems quite unneccesary.

However it has the value that you can check the motor switch from the intermittent relay - pull the relay then check the voltage at the 53S terminal connector (it should switch to 0v in the park position and be at ~12-14v the rest of the time) put the wipers in position 1 (normal slow wipe) you should see this switch dip term 53S to 0V once each cycle.

Alan, apologize to bring this back up.

If I've got 0v at the S terminal during the wiping process, is that telling me the park switch in the motor is bad?

Terminal 53S should switch between 12v & 0 each cycle - this comes from the motor switch terminals

Note this is not 12v & 'off' - it actually switches to ground and to ignition supply. See if with ignition off you have a 0 ohms path to ground on pin 53s - if its open curcuit it could just be a wiring problem somewhere...
